Apparently, emptying the recycle bin did the required magic. I will follow
up on your suggestion about encrypting the files on the laptop.

Isn't *.mbf a backup file? In your message of 7-20 you told me that it was
the program file that needed repair. I have backup files on both the desktop
and the external drive, and have restored files without a problem...except
for the ensuing "Cannot enter..." message.

Don't forget to empty the RecycleBin folder when done.

You might consider setting up an encrypted drive, and put your .mny
and .mbf files there. It is a chore to have to open the "drive" upon
startup, but it will protect your info if the laptop is filched.
TrueCrypt is free and powerful. I would configure it so that you do
not Auto Dismount while you have Money open.

Sorry to be a pest, Cal. I did the level 2 repair, naming the backup
msmoney1.exe...but after taking that action I cannot find that file. I
re-installed Money 2006 from the CD, and I looked to see if I had anything
flagged as "read-only," without success. I can still use Money on my laptop
(I had sworn to my wife that the laptop would contain no financial
information in case of loss, but...). I'm at my wit's end.

My Money 2006 version is 15.0.80.513. When I opened my checking account
this morning it went only as far as April...transactions since that date did
