Default Re: Converting from MS Money 2004 to Money 2007

Picking up on this relatively old thread...
It now seems that there is a good reason to upgrade the 2k4 and 2k5 versions
to 2k07: MS has now stopped supporting those and worse, the access to the
Microsoft Passport functionalities look like they will disappear soon which
means that we will not be able to download stock prices and currency rates
soon.

Is my understanding correct here or have i missed something. Being a user
of a French version, and i know there is the same problem in the UK, it
really feels that MS is letting all its foreign users down b/c there is no
way to import files easily in 2k07 from international versions other than
qif, and not upgrading means loosing the internet functionalities!

Thanks
Marc

Default Re: Converting from MS Money 2004 to Money 2007

Thanks Bob, appreciate your feedback.

I agree with you; having been through this exercise I wouldn't recommend it
to others to do the same. I decided to upgrade as I am now overseas and
unfortunately my original Money v2004 CDs are back in Australia in storage.

I have just been though an exercise with MS to sort out software issues and
it was painful and long. I've been trialling this upgrade/conversion work on
a test machine ... so I can still continue with v2004 if only I can get my
hands on a copy of Money v2004 (Australian Distribution); I have got my own
geniune keys from my original purchase.

I have been thinking (yes dangerous) of what will happen with MS Money in
the future? And how will users be assisted with future conversions. If
v2007 is anything to go by ... it was disappointing. I must admit the
disappoint in relation to the upgrade/conversion process did make me think
whether it was worth it to continue using Money. I used it because it was
great product; I think it still is ... but the conversion process wouldn't
encourage users to move to a latter version. In the earlier days ... the
upgrade was extremely easy.

As a curiosity ... I'm still trying to work out the difference between Money
v2007 and Office Accounting Express v2007? When I reviewed the promo .. I
couldn't help but think I was reading the Money description but with a few
extra things. Is this the future direction; Money phased out and consumers
having to buy this?

Anyway ... the motto applies "Once bitten twice shy."

Enjoying the discussions.

Cheers Marcel

OK. You've done the "upgrade" so there is no point in my being persistant
except as it applies to others. There is no functionality improvements
between M2K4 and M2K7, so there is no gain in the upgrade if you do not
download transactions. Perhaps there is a gain in setting yourself up with
the US version, but as you noted, even after all of your work, major items
like loans have to be recreated from scratch.

Default Re: Converting from MS Money 2004 to Money 2007

Part of the reason for the upgrade was to "keep up to date" with the newer
versions. Upgrades can be a pain at times so if you can be close to the
newer version hopefully the less of an issue when upgrading to the next
release. Also ... generally there are further improvements to the product
that either add additional functionality or simply make an existing
functionality easier to use or they just make it look nicer :-)

I honestly did not expect the upgrade from v2004 to v2007 to be as painful
as it was. I honestly didn't expect the software I had purchased when in
Australia would impact on the way the data was stored.

I would've thought the formating/presentation of saved data would have been
determined by the international configurations set in your OS. So it is
surprising that Microsoft has made the conversion/upgrade process between the
Money releases harder.

The only way I ended converting my files was to export each of my accounts
one at a time as a *.qif file (Find it amazing that we need to convert Money
data into a Quicken format; a pseudo competitor!!"

Thanks to Bob for the tip to select all files to import at once to ensure
the transactions are kept in sync. Its not mentioned in the help that this
has to be done like that. I did it one at a time and the account balances
were so out of whack. I had to redo the export process again to make sure
all accounts were done correctly (BTW - Prior to the export I also
re-activated all closed accounts as this was also mentioned as wise thing to
do to avoid any other issues.)

Finally got the accounts that matched the balances listed in v2004.

What I noticed so far:

1. Could not export a loan type account as opposed to a liability account.
The account just did not appear in the list of valid accounts to select and
export.

2. Noticed in Money 2007 that when I selected the option to display the
categories not all my own categories were listed. Strange. I checked an
account which I knew should have this category listed as an expense. When I
hovered over the transaction in the register; the category appeared. When I
selected the transaction display the details ... the category was empty.
Right clicking on the transaction I could go to the category and rename it
etc. But it still would not appear in the detailed transaction. Looking at
the category it had lumped it in a category group.

Whilst looking at the tools\settings\category settings option I stumbled
upon a way to get my customised categories to be displayed. I selected "Show
Full Category List" and Money added additional accounts. Knowing I had
culled a significant number to suit my purposes I then selected "Remove
Unused Categories". Voila' ... the category list now displays all my
customised categories. I couldn't figure out any other way to view the
customised categories other than through right clicking on a known
transaction. That may help others out there. There probably is an
explanation what happened here.

Appreciate all the comments people have submitted so far. I'll still hang
onto my v2004 install just a little longer until things bed down a bit more
before I decommision it (sob ..).

Thats true. I think some of the motivation to upgrade non-US versions lies
with the changes in backup & budget and protecting oneself against the
future. Germany lost their version in 2000, Italy in 1999, France/UK, is
appears, in 2005. The only version still going in the US, so moving to it
has some merit. Not the best solution for all though. Outside the US, we
don't download as much stuff as those in the US, so the download limit
affects less people (still affects our manual OFX imports and quotes
though).

Of course, the basic question is why you want to change from 04 to 07
anyway? Is there any reason that you want to switch to the US version? In
the US you need to upgrade in order to extend the life of downloading, but I
don't think that applies is there is no localized version to upgrade to.

Also make sure that when you import you use Ctrl + click to select all
files. This makes sure that inter-account transfers get matched.

Thanks Bob,

I thought that might be the only option left. Just wanted to check whether
there was another way than exporting/importing *.qif files. I started to do
that and then noticed that when you create a new file; new accounts have to
be created for all the accounts you export.

The only M2007 versions are US and Japanese! So I think you can probably
tell which version you downloaded! ;-)

See http://money.mvps.org/faq/article/28.aspx for instructions on QIF
export/import. It is the only way to convert between regions.

Default Converting from MS Money 2004 to Money 2007

Initially received the following message: "Money cannot open this file
because it was created by an incompatible version".

Some information on this subject indicate that I needed to upgrade first by
going through to MS Money 2005. However the same message was returned.

Further searching I came across the post in MS KB
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304254 "You receive "Money cannot open this
file because it was created by an incompatible version" when you try to open
Microsoft Money"

This makes sense as my software was purchased in Australia. I am now
overseas. I downloaded MS Money 2007 (Trial) to try out before upgrading.

The solution suggests exporting each account to a *.qif files and
re-importing the files in MS Money 2007. Its a fair bit of work as you need
to create all your accounts from scatch then import your equivalent *.qif
files.

How do I know what the "localised version" of software was that was
downloaded?

How is this problem avoided when you go overseas. Do you have to continue
purchasing software from the country you no longer reside in? If that is the
case how would I go about obtaining trail "localised versions" of MS Money?
For eg. get MS Money 2005/2007 that is distributed for Australia?

Is there another way I can convert my data to the new versions of Money?

Advice as to what steps could be followed to successfully get my current
data to a the new versions of Money would be appreciated greatly.

Cheers Marcel
