Have you tried changing your opening balance in the closed account to zero?

Success, sort of !

I've closed that account.

Using this months statement I have created a new account, started it
with a zero balance, added all the transactions and WHOOPEE, it now
works.

Don't know what the problem was before but I now have a working
account to track my debt on credit cards.

Thanks for all your patience and the pointers in trying to get it
right.

Have you checked the type of account reported in Account Details? What
section does it show up in in the Account List?

Thanks for your patience Dick.

I added a charge equal to the balance and it did indeed go to zero.

I then went into the account details and changed the opening balance
from a £2300 to -£2300. Changed the ending balance but still has the
account adding charges and subtracting credits. Swapped it back again
and still no improvement.

I have this months statement from the credit card company. I'm going
to create a new account and start from scratch see how that pans out.

What I'm desperately trying to tell you is that Money is backwards
regardless of the reality in the real world account.

Make a charge in the account equal to the balance. Does the balance go to 0?
See what I mean?

Please try this: go into the Account Details. On the Account Beginning
Balance, change the number to be the negative of whatever number is there.
If it's 1,000, make it -1,000. If it's -1,000 make it 1,000. Just try it.
Please. If you don't like the results you can put it back the way it was...

A negative balance in the Credit Card account register, as in you owe -£3000
also indicates that Money thinks the bank owes you money. The range of
reasons for this is as indicated previously.

"Voiding" the transaction simply removed the value from both accounts
current account increases by value and credit card account decreases
by the same amount.

Total balance in the Credit Card account register is -£3000

in the account list this is shown as +£3000 and is added to my overall
accounts balance as a credit.

If the credit card balance in the Account List is not (red) but is black it
indicates that Money thinks the bank owes you money.

There's typically a limited range of explanations: a) The bank owes you
money, not the other way around, b) There's a sign reversal in a beginning
balance.

What it that in the Credit Card account register balance before and
after the Voiding?

How did the transfer change the checking account balance?

If you temporarily Void the transfer (with right-click), do both
account's Adj.Balance numbers go up in the AccountList?

Seems it has it's knickers in a knot.

It is treating charges as credits and credits as charges.

Any ideas how I can re-educate it?

In the account list it is in black and shows the total. It even adds
it to my overall acount totals making me appear quite a lot more
wealthy than reality.

And what's it say the balance is for the credit card account in the Account
List?

What's it say at the bottom of the credit card account register? What color
is the text? Does it have parenthesis around the number?

Nope that isn't it,

It seems to me that Money has simply forgotten how to do arithmetic.

A charge to the credit card is a debt, I'm happy with that. However,
when I make a payment (by transfer) form the current account this also
appears as increased debt. It doesn't reduce the outstanding
balance. The current account reduces which is what I would expect but
the credit card account is not updating correctly.

Most likely you entered the opening balance as a negative number. In
a credit card account, the balance is what you owe. A negative
number would indicate a credit balance.

Right-click the account from the AccountList, and adjust the opening
balance.

Default Recording Transactions (NOOB Alert)

I have MS Money 2005.

I've set up my current and credit card accounts.

When I make a payment to the credit card it is not reducing the
balance but increasing it.

eg, transactions totalling £500 of debt.

I make payment by transfer from current account of £500, current
account reduces by £500, credit card account shows £1,000.

What am I doing wrong?
