| I am having the exact same problem with Money 2007 and Vista. I think it is a Vista problem but it really sucks when VIsta is incompatable with a MS product like Money. I have used Money for 10 years but I am ready to switch to Quicken. I was checking this group to see if the problem has a known solution. |

| Actually, I'm surprised Money Plus attempted to write to "Program Files" since UAC Registry and File Virtualization was devised specifically to deal with legacy applications whose programmers failed to follow proper programming guidelines. |

| Under Folder [and Search Options], select Folder Options > View > Show hidden files and folders then navigate to and move the file to a location under Documents in your user profile. In Vista, as part of UAC (User Account Control), only the trusted installer has write access to "%SystemRoot%\Program Files", so if any other program attempts to write there, Vista redirects the write to the user's VirtualStore: "%UserProfile%\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Prog ram Files". In your case, "%SystemRoot%" resolves to "C:" and "%UserProfile%" resolves to "C:\Users\Rusty". If they are in a place like ProgramFiles, Vista will create an impermanent copy of the file for the user to use, unless the user explicitly right-clicks at launch and choose RunAsAdministrator that time. Right-click the Money icon and choose RunAsAdmistrator to let updates happen. Then reboot the computer. Check that the Money 2007 version is 16.0.*.1303. What is happening is "File Virtualization" of Vista. Search on that term, and see http://www.hanselman.com/blog/Vistas...alization.aspx - quote - > "Mark" wrote: > > Please be sure to let us know if you discover anything. > > The time stamp on the tmp file may help (in at least narrowing down the > > timeframe when something happened differently). | I recently transferred my earlier version Money data file to the new Vista operating system with Money Plus Deluxe. File was updated to the new Money Plus version and seems to be working properly. However, it established the file in C:\users\rusty\appdata\local\virtualstore\programf iles. I found it via the search engine but I cannot navigate to it through the folders hierarchy. When I get to C:\users\rusty\ there is no visible folder named "appdata" to continue. Can someone explain this to me? | Please be sure to let us know if you discover anything. The time stamp on the tmp file may help (in at least narrowing down the timeframe when something happened differently). So you could try to identify what may have been different during that time. -Mark <sue.chastain[at]gmail.com> wrote in message news:1184642850.335933.46690[at]m3g2000hsh.googlegroups.com... - quote - > On Jul 16, 11:12 am, "Mark" <a...[at]abcd.com> wrote: > > Thanks, > > Is there anything else about how your system behaves when it "loses" the > > data file versus when it finds it and loads fine? > > For example: > > - Some other program running? > > - Some error/crash? > > - Logging out, Switch User? > > - Some update downloading for some other program? > > - Some weird behavior in Money? > > - Backup behavior (skipping backup versus letting it do it) > > - etc > > > -Mark > Hi Mark, > Nothing that I have been able to pinpoint. Since I can never know exactly when it disappears, all I have to go by is the time stamp on the TMP file that is left behind. I've scoured Windows' error logs looking for something to coincide with this, and have not been able to turn anything up. |

| Thanks, Is there anything else about how your system behaves when it "loses" the data file versus when it finds it and loads fine? For example: - Some other program running? - Some error/crash? - Logging out, Switch User? - Some update downloading for some other program? - Some weird behavior in Money? - Backup behavior (skipping backup versus letting it do it) - etc -Mark <sue.chastain[at]gmail.com> wrote in message news:1184422282.453859.243390[at]k79g2000hse.googlegroups.com... - quote - > On Jul 12, 11:21 am, "Mark" <a...[at]abcd.com> wrote: > > Another user mentioned something about hibernation and this problem. > > Is this a laptop? > > Does this seem to be related to Vista going into hibernation? > > > -Mark > It is a desktop computer that I never put into hibernation/sleep. |

It is on the same physical drive as C. My Money file has resided on the F drive for years and years, through multiple Windows and Money versions. I clean-installed Vista in mid-March and the first occurrence of the disappearing Money file was on March 28. | Just to add to the voices, I have been experiencing this same problem for several months. I am running Money Deluxe 2007 under Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit, and my Money files resides in F:\Sue\Documents\Money For the past 4-5 months, every 3-4 weeks, the Money file simply disappears and in its place is a ~XXXXX.tmp file. The temp file can be renamed with a mny extension and will open just fine. Every time it happens I check the time stamp on the temp file that is left behind, and can find no rhyme or reason to it--it has been in the wee hours of the night, and in the middle of the afternoon. I tried to match it up to times when I have virus scans, defrag, or backups scheduled and have even looked in event viewer trying to find something that corresponded to those times. So far, I have not been able to associate these disappearances to anything. Even though I make regular backups, it is still a serious annoyance and a major concern, and I am beginning to look at alternatives to Money because of this. |

| By the way is there a .tmp file of the same size as the .mny file in the directory that the .mny file resides in? If so, what type of antivirus, antispyware, etc. programs are running that might be scanning file activity and reacting to a file read/write/delete behaviour? -- Regards Bob Peel, Microsoft MVP - Money For UK tips & fixes see http://support.microsoft.com/default...d=fh;EN-GB;mny. | The symptoms that you describe are very definitely indicative of the .mny file residing somewhere where Vista thinks it ought not to be. As Cal posted I originally had mine in Program Files but quickly found that was not a "good thing". Personally I have my .mny file on an external HDD but a specially created folder on the root of your C: drive ought to be OK. Try moving the .mny file to somewhere safe and rather than opening the Money program and letting it find your file by default, navigate to it with (My) Computer or Windows Explorer and double click on the .mny file name. If you just open the Money program it will remember the last location it found the ..mny file (even if it is Program Files) and open it from there. -- Regards Bob Peel, Microsoft MVP - Money For UK tips & fixes see http://support.microsoft.com/default...d=fh;EN-GB;mny. | My file has disappeared 3 times in 6 months. Today being the latest episode. I am running Vista Home Prem 32 bit with Money Home & Business 2007. My file is located in the appropriate user folder. I even recreated my file system the last time it happened to see if putting it in a totally different structure would help. I've renamed the file; archived and just about everything else I could think of. Today... after having had my file open earlier in the day, upon reopening Money the file no longer existed. I was able to rebuild/restore from backup without an issue, but.... WHERE IS THE FILE GOING?! Could this be a DEP issue? The only way I have no system mysteries is if I TOTALLY disable DEP. I enabled DEP yesterday for the first time in about 4 months. That's the only difference in my operating conditions between yesterday and today. Any other ideas? | My money file is in the right place. I think it has to do with Vista's automagic disk maintenance, because it seems to go away on a regulare timed basis. <fwiw"Bob Peel, MVP" <bob_peel[at]kiandra.freeserve.co.uk.INVALID> wrote in message news:OdQLW$fpHHA.5008[at]TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... - quote - > As Chris has already posted you can't keep your .mny file in the old > default of /program/files. |
