Documents folder for your user (which is also aliased as "My Documents" for compatibility. Apply the Vista update mentioned below (tho it may already be applied). Then do the Money install. When you do the install, be sure to run the setup as Administrator. Rather than have Money create a new .mny file, you would normally tell Money to use that existing file. If you did want to let it initially create a new empty file for testing purpose, you can create the file without a LiveID on it by selecting Decline when the file is being created. - quote - > Rod > "Cal Learner-- MVP" <via_newsgroup[at]please.tnx> wrote in message > news:l084335pu590d0ilfbmjdvirblmiognj66[at]4ax.com... > > In microsoft.public.money, Rod wrote: > > > > I've got Microsoft Money 2006 Premium edition on my laptop. | Cal, I've got another question for you. I've been setting up my laptop on Vista for a few days now (mainly because I only have an hour or less to work on it at any time), so this weekend I'll install MS Money 2006 Premium using the CD. As I've said, I've got the .MNY file set aside before I did the upgrade to Vista. Now, after I install MS Money, it will create a new .MNY file. Do I just stop it at some point, or not completely fill it out, and then point it to my .MNY file? Or do I put it into whatever the "My Document" area is in Vista before I install MS Money, and let the installation figure out that it is supposed to use the .MNY file, or what? | Thank you, Cal. I'm going to sit down to the laptop now, catch my finances up and pay bills. Then I will back up the Money data to a shared folder on one of my desktops and also put it onto a USB drive. Then I'll start the wipe and load. I really appreciate your help! Here are some additional suggestions on your changes: I suggest that> else I should save so that I can properly get my MS Money environment back? you might want to put your *.mny file into a sub-folder/subdirectory in your Documents folder to minimize clutter. I name mine mn. I would also copy your existing *.mbf files there, and change your on-exit backup to backup to there. If you restore a backup, don't have it try to restore to the default location. Instead browse to the new location. -------------------------- While you are thinking about your changes, review your backup strategy. Here are my backup suggestions: In M06: Tools-> Settings-> BackupSettings I suggest checking x Automatically backup my Money file every time I close Money Save in [a place on your hard drive ] x Ask me before backing up each time* x Compress Backup Files Keep only the _20_most recent backup files [adjust to taste] x Perform scheduled backups every _14_ days Save in [a USB flash drive location] x Ask me before backing up each time* x Compress Backup Files Keep only the _2_most recent backup files [adjust to taste, but Money 2006 does not automatically trim to USB as it should] Then periodically, perhaps once per month or more, copy your latest backup (uniquely named by Money) to a CDR. With XP, this can be a copy and paste operation. Otherwise use the burning software that came with your CDR drive. I strongly suggest use of a USB Flash drive rather than floppies. They are bigger, so you don't have to swap media to back up. Plus they are much more reliable (but not failure-proof). * The reason I have Money ask me, is that I don't want to back up each time I exit. If I went into Money 5 times in a day, I would not want to back up 5 times, nor would I want to delete 5 other backup files. You will be given the choice to BackUpNow or to Postpone. |

Be sure that your Money and backup files are moved to a spot that you will have full privileges to, such as Documents/MyDocuments. If they are in a place like ProgramFiles, Vista will create an impermanent copy of the file for the user to use, unless the user explicitly right-clicks at launch and choose RunAsAdminsistrator that time. Make sure you are prepared to reinstall. If you purchased Money via download, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/889930/ . If you have the retail disk, have it handy. Reinstall Money by running the setup by right-clicking the setup icon and choose RunAsAdmistrator. Check that the SSL2 protocol is enabled. That checkbox may be in IE Tools-> InternetOptions-> Advanced. Right-click the Money icon and choose RunAsAdmistrator to let any available update happen. Then reboot the computer. |

| I've got Microsoft Money 2006 Premium edition on my laptop. I also have Windows XP on it. I want to upgrade it to Windows Vista, by doing what is called a "wipe and load". That means I'll reformat the hard drive and install Vista onto it. Then I'll install my various applications (Office, etc). This includes reinstalling Money 2006. Of course, I've got to save my current Money file (.MNY). Is there anything else I should save so that I can properly get my MS Money environment back? Rod |
