I think Treasury Notes and -- now that they're available -- Bonds are
handled fine in Money. Your purchase, redeem, and record interest just as
you would any other bond. And, as with other bonds, prices can't be updated
online. Treasury Bills are quite another thing: Money -- to be blunt --
sucks with them. The problem with bills is documented at
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;823031 and the
resolution I suggested there turns out not to work.

In additon to what L Cramer said, the symbols used on MSN Money (e.g. TC2Y)
is only going to give you the price for the most current bill available
(i.e. would not match with one you purchased last year).

Others here have commented that Money doesn't handles Treasury debt well. I
agree. I regularly rollover 4-week, 3- and 6-month bills, and 2-year notes.
Since I didn't want new individual investments each time I did a rollover, I
set up a separate investment account with individual investments for each
bill/note time period. I treat them as CDs, entering the net purchase price
and recording interest separately when paid or the CD/bill is redeemed.
This works well for bills.

If you want to enter each 2-year note separately as a bond, which will pick
up correctly the small capital gain at redemption, the "coupon rate" is
simply the stated interest rate, the purchase price will be 99.xxxx%. When
I've done it this way, I've used names that include the maturity date,
T-Note 2y 10-07. No ticker symbol is needed or useful as far as I know.

Default Treasury Notes in Microsoft Money

Hello folks, I was searching around for this topic and couldn't find a
good answer. I have recently started to invest in government bonds via
Treasury Direct and was wondering the proper way to keep these
instruments in Microsoft Money.

The 13-week t-bill I bought, I think I figured it out OK, but the 2
year Treasury Note was a little bit of a problem.

First, how do add the investment? I know that Microsoft recognized the
ticker TC2Y for the two year treasury, but when I added the investment
by using the ticker, it didn't seem to work so well.

Also, I believe I was prompted for the coupon rate, which I don't know
for this bond, or at least not how to figure it out. I do know, from
the treasury direct website that there's a dividend payment due to me
on this bond on a specific date, but I haven't found a way to
represent this knowledge in Money.

Does anyone have any advice for how to keep track of these government
bonds in Microsoft Money?

Thanks!
