You reported progress in the follow-up post, but let me describe the> manager is supposed to work (and the Help function is as usual not much > use...). Payee Rules Manager: Banking-> AccountTools-> Categories&Payees-> Payees-> GoToPayeeRulesManager. Your downloaded transactions may come with some generic term where the Payee should be. Excluded Payee Names identifies words and phrases that should be ignored from the payee field (e.g., check, deposit). Add words that are generically added by your bank. Unfortunately there are no wildcards, so check 334, check 335, and check 336 will each be treated as potential new payee names. Set Tools-> Settings-> OnlineServices-> ShowStandardizedPayeeNames to combine payees that differ only by a number at the end. This may work better after you have combined payees from previous downloads. |

| OK, I figured out how to 'merge' two or more accounts by using the 'move' function. However when I download a new statement Money does not match the original name to the 'new' name -- it appears in the account register exactly as it does in the bank statement, not with the new name. So there is obviously still something I'm not doing right... Assistance appreciated. | I'm new to MS Money 2007 and can't quite figure out how the payee rules manager is supposed to work (and the Help function is as usual not much use...). Here is the situation (made-up example): I have several payees which I want to group together: 'Payee 1', 'Payee 2'... and so on should all appear simply as 'Payee Group Alias'. How do I do that? I would have thought that if I defined 'Payee Group Alias' as a preferred payee name (either by adding a new payee or renaming e.g. 'Payee 1'), the Add under Payee Name Variation to the right would somehow produced a list of of existing payees which I could easily match to the preferred name. So something like a dropdown list with 'Payee 1', 'Payee 2',... as well as 'Irrelevant Payee 1', 'Irrelevant Payee 2',... where I could choose the relevant payees and click Add. As it is I can't figure out how the 'Add a Payee Name Variation' dialog box works. If I choose 'Payee Group Alias' as the 'Payee name' and 'Payee 1' as the 'Payee Name Variation' I get the message that 'Payee 1' is already in use and I need to enter a different name. If I do the opposite ('Paye Name' = 'Payee 1', 'Payee Name Variation' = 'Payee Group Alias') then I can create the first match but when I try to do the second ('Paye Name' = 'Payee 2', 'Payee Name Variation' = 'Payee Group Alias') I get the same error message as before: name already in use. Can somebody please explain to me step-by-step what I should do? Thank you |
