As anyone else in this NG will tell you, Money can sometimes behave
like no other program on your hard drive.

It's my generic "program close" sound, not specific to Money. And it
doesn't stop anything else from closing properly.

When I hear that sound when I'm not expecting it, I know something's
wrong. When I fail to hear it when I do expect it, I know something's
wrong.

JK,
In my particular situation, I've found that if I do not move the mouse
for a second or two Money will always close successfully.

You might want to lose the sound effect for Money closing. It might
even be the culprit.

Others have reported improvement by exiting the program from File - Close,
rather than the X button at the top right.

No. It only addresses prices reloading going to the Portfolio view.
I think that if you start Money less than 24 hours later, it will do
less on start up that time.

Since you have the Third Party-handled bank, that limits your
options.

It means that despite doing what I could to disable the background
banking, it won't disable. Maybe I missed the proper settings?

Yes, there is a third party involved to get to one of my banks.

Does doing this actually turn off background banking? Right now, when
I start Money it goes online and downloads not only the stock price on
the mutual fund my FBO-IRA is in, it also downloads the latest
transactions from both the broker holding my FBO and a companion MMK
and my regular bank.

Spell-checker. :-(

Clear Portfolio-> UpdatePrices-> UpdateAutomaticallyEvery__Minutes for
better speed when entering the portfolio view.

I don't totally understand that sentence, but that's ok. Does the
description of at least one of your FIs include the term "third
party" at http://www.microsoft.com/money/bankonline.aspx ? If not,
there is another option available to you.

Since I don't have the problem, I don't know if any might be of use
to you. These were some things I have seen posted as having helped
the poster with the problem.

One time saver I can suggest, that helped me, is to clear
Portfolio-> UpdatePrices-> Paradigmatically__Minutes for
better speed when entering/reentering the portfolio view.

I'm usually doing several things at once when I'm in front of my
computer, so waiting isn't always a possibility, as something else may
already be doing something.

- quote -

The on-disk backup, or the user-selectable backup? I have it prompt
for the user-selectable one anyway, because sometimes I know I'm going
to be running Money again later in the day so I want to postpone that
backup until then.

- quote -

I wish I could, but when I tried it still did the background banking
thing, so I re-enabled it. I would much rather manually tell it to go
online and check for downloadable transactions when +I+ want it to. If
only to remove the system overhead of having it run all the time.

Some have reported that they are more successful in getting Money
to exit when it should with one of these actions:

After telling Money close, don't go ahead to another action right
away. Let the computer sit as you hear the disk action.

Don't have Money set to automatically backup upon exit. Instead
set it up to ask via the pop-up, and then either do or do not back
up.

Disable background banking.

These are not universally successful, but you might check if one
does the job for you.

Default RE: Money doesn't always close when closed

This is a feature added in M06.

If you contact MS like I did in early 2006, you are told to kill two
processes, then re-open M06, do a quick clean, then a full clean, then a
quick clean again. I remember thinking that MS's strategy was something like
Dell's service in that at the end you never want to call them again.

This feature was not true of M05, so I'm very sad to hear of it in M07.

When I'm using this program, my mantra frequently becomes: "Doesn't anybody
at Microsoft actually use this software?". Repeating that over and over helps
a bit.

Default Money doesn't always close when closed

MS Money 2007 Deluxe, version 16.0.120.1030 on WinXP Pro SP2.

Not always, but often, maybe a quarter to a third of the time, when I
click the X on the right side of the caption bar to close Money, it
goes away from my display but I never hear my "program exit" sound
effect. Attempting to re-run Money when this happens results in an
error that Money is already running. And sure enough, checking the
system task manager shows msmoney.exe as running.

I can force it closed from the task manager, and then everything is
fine, until the next time it happens.
