| What I am struggling w/ is signing on to my bank. Now it would appear it is "essential" for MonEss to work w/ an internet connection to your bank account. I signed into my BofA, but put in the wrong psswrd. Since then I have tried to go back w/ the message "Temporary UNavailable." I don't know if its a MonEss thing or a bank thing. Furthermore, is MonEss supposed to provide the service for free since the program doesn't work w/out it? BofA charges $10/mo.! Talk about being held hostage....anyone have a clue? |

| File|Open? I'm not sure I follow your M05 comment. Are you saying you have an M05 file and you can't open it in M05? Why not? Message? If you just reinstalled M05, did you do an Internet Update after installing but before trying to File|Open the existing M05 file? See http://umpmfaq.info/faqdb.php?q=177 for more information if this is your scenario. If you don't want to use Money 2007, uninstall Money 2007.> I don't want 2007, just my old 2005 will do just fine... Install Money 2005 if you want to use Money 2005. After you do, first either open the sample.mny file in your install folder, or let Money 2005 create a new Money file, clicking Decline in the process. It will do an update. Close Money. Then open Money. Then you should be able to open or restore your existing Money 2005 files. |

| I also note your comment about "upgrading to a product [you] don't need". By this, do you mean Deluxe vs. Essential? Deluxe sells regularly for <$20. The old Standard product didn't fit under that by much and was generally harder to find and sold--at retail anyway--many fewer copies. They had already de-featured Standard of even "essential" (to many users, anyway, but not, apparently, to "must users" that MEss is targeted at) features like Cash Flow Forecasting. If you think moving to Deluxe is a big, expensive "upgrade" I think you are also missing the mark. Would you feel better if they called Deluxe the new Standard? | FWIW, here's the draft of an as-yet-unpublished FAQ entry for MEss: ========= Money Essentials (MEss for short) is a toy Microsoft hopes to use to wean lots of new users from a complex and expensive-to-support product toward something much more like a bank web site that delivers ads from Microsoft rather than the bank. They are, apparently, filling the OEM channels chock full of this thing. The probably license it to the OEMs for a $5 discount on the Vista operating system license or something. For some people MEss probably does all they want or need. If all you are interested in is a consolidated view of balances and transactions--as viewed by the FIs--and don't much care about analysis, reporting, investment performance, serious budgeting, income and expense categorization, etc., MEss may be for you. Cal Learner--MVP posted a handy link to Microsoft's features comparison. But there are a number of things you can't determine from this table. Examples: MEss can't even do a Transfer that shows in two accounts at once. It also won't/can't upgrade your pre-existing Money data file since it's a fundamentally more "Essential" (less capable?) approach to the problem. For previous Money users, that's the disqualifier for MEss. So, if you have been using a previous version of Money, you may just want to uninstall Mess to get the waste disk space back, then install your previous version and get on with life. If you haven't used a previous version of Money, you might want to fiddle around with the thing, but remember this: it isn't representative of the rest of the Money product line. If you like it and think it's all you need, that's great. But if it seems like it's missing something, that's because it is. |

| What makes you think Money 2007 Essentials (MEss) has much of anything beyond outward appearances in common with the versions of Money you've been using? It doesn't. The editions that do (M2007 Deluxe, M2007 Premier, etc.) are derived from what you've been using and they do upgrade existing files, just like all previous version--until MEss. I'm not a tireless defender of the Redmond faith, and certainly am not a big fan of MEss or the system that thought it was "the next big thing" for Money, but I think your criticism here is off-base. | I just read that Microsoft has decreed that Money 2007 Essentials will not be able to open to previous versions of Money files. This has made my decision to switch to Quicken a no-brainer. I've struggled along with Money through each version with the attitude of "the devil you know", but it appears that longtime users are no longer important to Microsoft unless they are willing to upgrade to a product that they don't need. Since I will no longer use my existing Money files, it just feels like Microsoft is holding a gun to my head. thanks, Microsoft. |
