| The reason I asked was to have you verify in Money that this was the symbol that Money had. Money typically identifies money market mutual funds as funds ending in two Xs (e.g. ABCXX). So, I was just wondering if somehow the symbol had been wrong. -Mark "Cedar-D" <CedarD[at]discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:531EAF89-E0B9-40A5-924B-402371DE4F1A[at]microsoft.com... - quote - > Hi Mark- > I was (now deleted- tho is makes no difference) TIPBX > These posts get so long- you probably didn't see it written there. | Cedar-D and Michael, I also tried this and Money seems to have handled it properly. That doesn't mean, of course, that it always has and always will. | I just entered a new purchase of TIPBX, identifying it as a mutual fund. Money found the investment, updated the current price (10.12) and still calls it a mutual fund. | Hi Michael, Yes- somewhere amidst all these posts (it's very confusing for someone (me) who isn't used to discussion groups): the symbol for the Bond Plus fund is TIPBX And- as I wrote somewhere, I don't download from TIAA-CREF, I use paper statements & enter transactions myself. Apparently, where I got into trouble was in Money's updates of fund prices (when I listed the symbol). | The online update within Money gets the new prices (if the fund symbol is entered- which it was when the fund was re-categorized by the Money program). When I purchase funds, I enter the transaction manually (as a transfer from my checking account). when I get a transaction confirmation (in the mail, from TIAA). I don't get online data from TIAA. | Hi Michael- I don't know what to tell you. That is what happened. When I first entered the account info, I "told" Money it was a mutual fund. I also entered the symbol. I noticed the problem when I used the allocation tool and saw, according to Money, I had too much money in Money Market accounts. Then I saw my Bond Plus fund was listed as Money Market/Cash. When I go to the "Detail" window- there is no option for Mutual Fund. I just tried putting the symbol back in & did an online update, to see if it would correct- it did not. Again- any ideas to fix this are appreciated. As I wrote before, since each purchase is tied to my checking account, I can't delete the account without deleting all the transactions in my checking account. Thanks, Cedar "Michael Gordon" wrote: - quote - > Well, let's see what the original posters have to say -- I can't imagine a > situation in which Money would change an investment type. > -- > Michael Gordon > "Bill Becker" <BillBecker[at]discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:E4CD9D13-76D0-4644-AFEF-44AEA34BA860[at]microsoft.com... > > Michael, > > I don't know about downloads because I only do manual entry. MMF has its price fixed at $1.00. Keep an extra copy/backup of your file at various stages in case you want to undo something. ================ Changing MMF to Mutual Fund ===================== It is not trivial, but not as hard as it first appears. A few minutes should do it. In the details, remove the existing symbol, and rename the existing "MMF" to something you will never use. Let's suppose you choose zzzz. Create a new Fund with the correct name and symbol. Go back to investment zzzz and choose View: Investment Details. Enter a fake new Buy dated before all other transactions with quantity more than the total of other "MMF" transactions. Change each non-fake transaction to the fund using the drop-down list. Start with the oldest transaction. Particular attention should be made to not change the total. So you will want blank the price, and to change the quantity to the actual number of shares you transacted. You will probably need to work with the order of things. If you lose the total for a transaction you are working on, press the Esc key to get out of that edit attempt, and try again. Keep going until there are no more zzzz transactions remaining except the fake transaction. Delete the fake Buy transaction. At that point you can "delete" zzzz. ================================= If you have trouble with downloads wanting to match to zzzz after the change, there is a process that can deal with that, if you are motivated. Keep an extra backup from *after* you make the above change, but *before* you attempt to download transactions from your broker / fund company. |

| Michael, I don’t know about downloads because I only do manual entry. However, the original posters (John and Cedar-D) indicated that they entered the problem investment manually as a mutual fund and that Money had subsequently changed the investment type to money market. I asked for the specific investment so that I could do a test to reproduce the misbehavior. -- Bill Becker "Michael Gordon" wrote: - quote - > Money doesn't determine what kind of investment a security is; some FIs do > and that determination then can be downloaded into Money. > -- > Michael Gordon > "Bill Becker" <BillBecker[at]discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:FEC5D858-915D-48C3-93A3-0B492AB3091A[at]microsoft.com... > > Cedar, > > Did you ever resolve this? | Hi- I've had a similar problem I hoped would be fixed when I installed Money 2007. Money categorized a bond mutual fund as a money market fund after I put in the symbol. It most definitely is a bond fund. I took out the symbol. as you do, I enter all transactions manually & they (unfortunately) connect with my checking account- so I can't just delete the account & start over. I tried in "Details" to change to Other- the only other option- but it wouldn't let me. It's this software's bug & I want it to fix it so I can make use of asset allocation- it makes a difference! My situation is, I think, different- but- were you able to change the way Money categorized your account? I really need help with this.
