| Since you say you are a very new user, you might not know that you should use the "transfer:" category. After you create your Cash account, stop using (or even delete) the expense category "Cash Withdrawal." It will not do what you want. Instead, scroll down to the bottom of the category list, to the "Special" categories. Choose "Transfer:Cash." There won't be a "Transfer:Cash" until you have created the Cash account, so do that first. Then the money you withdraw at the ATM will show up in the Cash account, and you can enter your spending transactions in there. Everybody else told you exactly right, I'm just not sure they started at a basic enough level for a very new user. | Oh, and create a Cash Account from Setup New Account--tell it no FI or not listed. Note this assumes you are not using Money Essentials (MEss) and are using Advanced Registers. Two possibilities:> where I spend cash money? > I've downloaded all my bank transactions and labelled them, and that's > fine, but I'd like to figure out where the money from "Cash > Withdrawls" goes by entering my daily spending from receipts and such. > There doesn't seem to be a way to do this... > I'm confused about creating a "Cash Account" as one thread suggested, > because this is the money from ATM withdrawls, not new income, and I'm > concerned treating it like income into a new account is going to mess > up my totals. Create a cash account named "Pocket Money" or somesuch. When you do a cash withdrawal, make it a transfer to "Pocket Money". Every time you spend some cash, record it as an expenditure in "Pocket Money". Balance the account occasionally so it matches the amount of money in your pocket. 2) (This is the way I do it.) Mostly I spend my cash on lunches and snacks. When I do the cash withdrawal, I immediately categorize it as "Food:Eating Out". When I spend cash on something else, I go into the split for that cash transaction and add a new line with the correct categorization. I then subtract that amount from the first line (which is Food:Eating Out). If you right-click on the amount, Money will allow you to choose "Add unassigned amount here" and do the arithmetic for you. |

| I'm a new user, so forgive me if this is obvious, but how do I record where I spend cash money? I've downloaded all my bank transactions and labelled them, and that's fine, but I'd like to figure out where the money from "Cash Withdrawls" goes by entering my daily spending from receipts and such. There doesn't seem to be a way to do this... I'm confused about creating a "Cash Account" as one thread suggested, because this is the money from ATM withdrawls, not new income, and I'm concerned treating it like income into a new account is going to mess up my totals. I'm also not sure how to create a "Cash Account". Can anyone please tell me the simplest way to track expenditures made in little green bills???? My goal for using this program is to track and be able to analyze where my money goes, and cash spending is an important aspect of that. If MS Money 2007 doesn't do that, does Quicken or is there a program that does? Help? Sorry for the simplistic question, any help is much appreciated! |
