was in. But, given that statement, is it safe to say thatI didn't realize that Money tries to open the last file I I can: 1) open the correct Money file - then open MS Money 2) assuming MS Money opens the correct file (it just did when I tried this), I can delete the other copies I have on my hard drive, leaving just the correct one that can be opened? This has been such a mess!! LOL. It feels like I'm on the downhill side, though. Thanks, again, Bonnie. | It doesn't really matter where the file is located, but it's better to keep it in a directory where you know you won't delete by mistake. You can find the location of your Money files by going to Start, Search or Find, Files and Folders and search for *.mny. Be sure to search My Computer. You can double click on any of these files to open them. Since you are saying that Money is trying to open an .mbf file, that sounds like it is the backup to the file you want. It's not good that it can't open it, but hopefully you can find the actual file and open it through the find. If you do any moving of files, just remember that Money tries to open the last file you were in, so if it is no longer where Money expects it to be, you will also get the error message you described. | Bonnie? I hope you're still out there. ![]() <<Sorry to confuse you.> First of all - no apology necessary - it's easily done, unfortunately. <g <<The far easier way to do this is to reinstall Money. This will replace the correct OFC file association. If the extra files you have lying around are OFC files, you can definitely delete them. Once the information has been imported into Money, you do not need them.> OK. I've taken two great pieces of advice and have 1) deleted my temp files (found as a suggestion in another thread to someone with a similar-sounding problem) 2) Re-installed M99. My problem, now, seems to be that the Money file is not in the correct directory. <--that's an uneducated guess, however. When I attempt to open M99, I receive the following message: 'Money cannot locate 'C:\MyDocuments\My MONEY RESTORE Backup 0.mbf' or cannot open it, possibly because it is a read-only file or your disk drive is write protected. If you have chosen the correct file and it cannot be accessed, you will need to open your most recent backup file. If the file is being used by another application, close it in the other application and try again.' * The 'newest' file that I have been using since correcting a plethura of other [corrupt data] issues is called 'MY MONEY RESTORE,' however, I don't know about the 'Backup 0.mbf' portion.' Do I manually move that file somewhere? I still have scads of other backups sitting there that I am afraid to fully delete till I get this running correctly. Thanks for your help - I hope you come across this message, again, since it's so old. ~Gwen - quote - > -----Original Message----- > Sorry to confuse you. | Sorry to confuse you. The far easier way to do this is to reinstall Money. This will replace the correct OFC file association. If the extra files you have lying around are OFC files, you can definitely delete them. Once the information has been imported into Money, you do not need them. | Bonnie, I'm back. <<That should work, but if not, remove the file association and reinstall Money.> I am beginning to think that this is the way I'm going to have to go. I can't even make it to the portion of the instruction where I type, 'c:\program files\Microsoft Money\System\Msmoney.exe-x' because (going back to the step #1 I was given), I don't have an entry in the File Types area called 'Money Download.' I have: Microsoft Money Backup File and Microsoft Money file. When I opted to skip ahead to #6, I was able to type Money Download in the New Type box, but, when it came time to type .ofc for Default Extention for Content Type, that line was grayed out. And I think I forgot to clarify that I do receive .ofc files from the bank. Anyway - in trying to remedy another Money problem I'd had (corrupt data being saved), I've got several useless Money files hanging around - still showing bad information. Do you think there would be a problem with me deleting those, just for my sanity's sake? ![]() Thanks, again. I'm feeling so useless, here!! LOL. ~Gwen - quote - > -----Original Message----- > Comments inline. . > > 1) You wrote: <<With Money 99, if a statement wasn't > > present, it was usually because Money hadn't received it > > since statements were not presented in the register. > > > I do normally receive statements in M99's register, but, > > I'm thinking that I am misunderstanding your meaning on > > the last part of that statement. > To fully understand this, you'd have to see the way a current version of > Money works. Money works. Basically, when you download a statement, the transactions are displayed in the register in bold until you accept them, as opposed to a Money 99 statement where you'd click on Transactions to Read and then be presented each transaction for review one at a time. However, if you are receive the statment as a qif file and import it as a new or recovered account rather than as a statement the transactions will simply be added to the register rather than being presented for review as a statement is. | Hi Bonnie, Thank you for your reply. I hate to appear dense, but, I'm afraid I'm confused about a couple of items. 1) You wrote: <<With Money 99, if a statement wasn't present, it was usually because Money hadn't received it since statements were not presented in the register. I do normally receive statements in M99's register, but, I'm thinking that I am misunderstanding your meaning on the last part of that statement. 2) <<Regarding the instructions you were given, the file shouldn't open with msmoney.exe, but rather with mnyimprt.exe. Money may recognize the ofc file as a statement and it still may work, though.> So, should I substitute 'mnyimprt.exe.' for the 'msmoney.exe.' if I attempt to do this (I haven't had a chance to do so, yet) and, finally 3) <<Another way to fix this would be to reinstall Money as that will redo the file associations.> Ironically, I *think* this is when my trouble began; when I reinstalled Money due to some other issues that I was having. Given that, Bonnie, if it were your files, what would you do, first? Thanks in advance! ~Gwen - quote - > -----Original Message----- > It sounds like you are downloading from your bank's website. | Bonnie, thanks for the tip--I was able to get it to work using that link. The repair utility didn't work but the sugessted last resort of exporting and re-importing worked fine so that I could continue using the data. I still have to set up my budget and bills/deposits but that shouldn't be too painfull. Thanks again. | It sounds like you are downloading from your bank's website. With Money 99, if a statement wasn't present, it was usually because Money hadn't received it since statements were not presented in the register. Regarding the instructions you were given, the file shouldn't open with msmoney.exe, but rather with mnyimprt.exe. Money may recognize the ofc file as a statement and it still may work, though. Another way to fix this would be to reinstall Money as that will redo the file associations. | Good Morning, I can't offer you any answers, but, wanted to mention that I'm running Money 99 and am having the same issue. I have just contacted my bank's technical support to see if this is something that they are seeing, too. | I use MOney 2002 and have background banking set up with US Bank. It has been working succesfully for over a year until just last week. It has stopped showing the downloaded transactions in the account register but it does alert me that there are statements to read. I have cleared my temporary internet files folder but that did not work. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Ngoni. |
