Maybe the competition of free is driving better choices?

The free portfolio at http://moneycentral.msn.com/stock_portfolio
has an "Enlarge/reduce portfolio" control that does much of what
David is asking for in Money: it toggles in a very substantial
increase of the payload of the portfolio view.

Money is somehow aligned with the MSN group at Microsoft. They are not about
selling application software. (Indeed, many places at Microsoft besides the
Money CD itself, the product we think of as Money is referred to as MSN
Money.) They are about steering eyeballs to ads for advertisers.

Look at the MSN home page (http://msn.com) some time. That's the design
concept for Money. Something, no matter how banal, for everybody. "War Comes
To California, 1,000,000 dead" "Brittney Feared Among Missing" "OJ Crime
Scene Demolished" "End To Dodger's Hopes For 2007?" "Get Great Bargains on
California Travel!" It's all the same: something for everybody, just attract
the eyeballs, that's all. All Flash and Trash.

To work around this, you could add a second video card or have a
two-output video card. Hook up that old monitor. Set the theoretical
position of the second screen to be to the upper-right to the main
screen. Then expand the Money screen to extend into the second
screen area. Drag the image around so that the payload part is on
the main screen.

I wish there were a way to expand the payload area otherwise.

Default get rid of junk on the screen?

Folks,

Is there any way to get rid of the junk on the screen?

I've been using Money 2001 since it came out. I've tried many of the
upgrades, but I haven't changed because of more and more junk on the
screen.

For example, with Money 2001, when I look at my portfolio on the screen,
it's 6" high and 10"wide. Even with that, I'd prefer to see more of the
portfolio, and less of the toolbars and whatnot. But with each update,
Microsoft has added more and more junk to the screen until now, with
Money 2006, my portfolio is 2.75" high and 9 1/8" wide.

My measurements are below, where the first column is a count, the second
column is height in inches, and the third column is a try at the name of
the item. "*** The Portfolio" is the one I want to see.

1 0.25 "My Money"
2 0.25 File ! Edit ! Favorites...
3 0.75 Toolbar
4 0.25 Home ! Banking ! ,,,
5 0.25 Investment Home ! ,,,
6 1.00 "Portfolio Manager"
7 0.75 Select View ...
8 0.25 Headings: News ! FYI ! ,,,
9 2.75 *** The Portfolio
10 0.25 Scroll Bar
11 0.25 Today's Total Change
12 0.75 Last update
13 0.75 Quotes Delayed 20 min
14 0.25 Windows XP "Start", etc.

Total 8.75 inches high

I keep thinking that maybe next year, Microsoft will get the "bloat"
message, and take some of this dumb stuff away. Isn't it a no-brainer
that you don't need ¾" across the screen to say that the quotes are
delayed 20 minutes? Maybe next year they'll fix it. But no, next year
they add more junk.

I'd stay with Money 2001, but it seems to be loosing functionality as
Microsoft encourages upgrades. I could change my screen resolution, but
then I wouldn't be able to see it as well. (My eyesight isn't as good as
it used to be.) Yes, I could buy a bigger monitor.

I've looked around the Money 2006 menus trying to find ways to get rid of
junk, but as far as I can tell, I've minimalized everything. Any
suggestions?

Thanks,

- Dave
