No, no symbols on any of the paperwork I've seen so far.

That sounds like the easiest. I have been doing my own calculations and
Add/Remove Shares but the Account Update looks easier to use.

Thanks.

Bruce.

This was your rationale. I'm assuming that your IRA has investments in
"private" funds the FI made up. If this isn't so, then the choice horizon
for how to treat it in Money opens up a lot. Do they not show you a symbol
on the transaction confirms or statements or prospectuses?

Into the case of my 401k, I cans see shares on some data but not on others.
So I just use the Account Summary|Account Update once a quarter or so to add
the Add/Remove Shares activities automagically. I buy $1 shares with
contributions.

Ah, that explains why I can't find symbols for them.

Ok, thanks much Dick. Right now I'm tracking it as a single $1 investment
rather than multiple. They don't send me the share/price information very
often so it's hard to break it down finer than that.

Bruce.

The issue here is not the IRA account. It's the investments that are not
market priced. The only thing I would do different in this scenario--rather
like my own 401k--is to define one investment per investment in the real
world account and track each as $1 shares. I can't say for sure that really
improves anything, but I feel better doing it this way.

Default Best way to handle an IRA

I have an IRA account that is invested in various mutual funds. I can't get
daily pricing on the funds, and tracking the share counts of all those funds
would be a pain in the backside.

So what I've been doing instead is just assuming a combined share price of
$1 and adjusting the shares to the account total. In other words, if my IRA
is worth $12345, that means I have 12345 shares at $1 per share. As the IRA
changes value over time, I just do a Add or Remove Shares until the account
value matches the actual value.

Since the account is tax exempt (deferred), I don't think this method will
have any long term implications, tax or otherwise.

Is this the best way to handle an IRA account?

Bruce.
