| Excellent strategy, Cal. I hope everyone reads this post and follows your strategy. FWIW, I've developed a slight variation after several years of using Money. I've found out the hard way the Money often starts to malfunction in ways that are not readily apparent at first and may become incorporated into all of your backups without your knowing it. Three recent examples that come to mind: 1. If a single paycheck entry is not matched correctly, your income will suddenly double in your Budget and cannot be reset. Nice if it were true, but it ain't. 2. The Home Mortgage account often stops working correctly and starts assigning your entire payment to principle and cannot be reset. Nice if it were true, but it ain't. 3. Reports are just plain scary. They frequently head south for reasons I have been unable to discern. And Money's "repair" options usually just make matters worse. They're worse than Outlook's. So I leave Money's automatic backups at the minimum setting and rely upon them very little. Instead I do a manual backup once or twice a week to another drive. So far I've been able to recover fairly easily from every trick each new version of Money has played on me. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "Cal Learner-- MVP" <via_newsgroup[at]please.tnx> wrote in message news:vkrao2p5j2no29ul4cqgio163s50o82eru[at]4ax.com... - quote - > In microsoft.public.money, Rod wrote: > > Thank you, Cal, I want to restore to the last backup, which for me was > > just > > last weekend. > Good. Good. Money 2006 default settings are good in that they back up the> last weekend. latest 4 sessions by default. Here is how I would improve them for my preferences: In M06 Tools-> Settings-> BackupSettings I suggest checking x Automatically backup my Money file every time I close Money Save in [a place on your hard drive ] x Ask me before backing up each time* x Compress Backup Files Keep only the _20_most recent backup files [adjust to taste] x Perform scheduled backups every _30 days Save in [a USB flash drive location] x Ask me before backing up each time* x Compress Backup Files Keep only the _2_most recent backup files [adjust to taste, but Money 2006 does not automatically trim to USB as it should] Then periodically, perhaps once per month or more, copy your latest backup (uniquely named by Money) to a CDR. With XP, this can be a copy and paste operation. Otherwise use the burning software that came with your CDR drive. I strongly suggest use of a USB Flash rather than floppies. They are bigger, so you don't have to swap media to back up. Plus they are much more reliable (but not failure-proof). * The reason I have Money ask me, is that I don't want to back up each time I exit. If I went into Money 5 times in a day, I would not want to back up 5 times, nor would I want to delete 5 other backup files. You will be given the choice to BackUpNow or to Postpone. - quote - > Rod > "Cal Learner-- MVP" <via_newsgroup[at]please.tnx> wrote in message > news 0o9o21kkbs3knlla4rlji7sevl93qqiqt[at]4ax.com...> > In microsoft.public.money, Rod wrote: > > > > I am going to do a restore from my last backup. | Thank you, Cal, I want to restore to the last backup, which for me was just last weekend. Restore puts the *.mny file that you restore to in the same> is something accessible from the File menu. What I want to know is, does a > restore complete delete everything that is in the MS Money database? What > does happen with a restore? condition that the .mny file was when you do the backup. You can restore to a different filename if you don't want to overwrite the current file. You can think of it as an undo of whatever you did since the restore file (*.mbf) was made. If you want to abandon everything and start from scratch, File-> New-> NewFile could be of use. |

| I am going to do a restore from my last backup. I am sure that the restore is something accessible from the File menu. What I want to know is, does a restore complete delete everything that is in the MS Money database? What does happen with a restore? Rod |
