Another possibility is to keep all information in one file but create a new
view in the Portfolio view. The new view would only view the portfolio of
the second set of accounts.

Yes. File-> New-> NewFile, and select a new name. That also has the
advantage of not loading your real file with data for your
experimental portfolio.
