I *had* a problem. I was occupied with some other things, so I did
not pursue fixing or trying to produce a replication procedure. I
just reverted.

I called my problem the evil twin investment problem. I am thinking
that your problem is probably not the same.

I am pretty sure that did not happen. It's much more likely that you
just clicked the wrong one by mistake when presented with a list.
They were very likely adjacent in the list.

I don't think CUSIPs are ever reused. Symbols are reused, but not
CUSIPs.

Always work with a copy, or be ready to undo by doing File-> Restore.
So you would use the process, and say that the stock was the same as
AOL.

That would be nice. Even a process to forget the CUSIP would do the
job, but I would like to be able to display the info also.

I had had something that may be the same as you are describing with
Money 2007. If so, you may want to make sure that you don't delete a
backup that pre-dates the problem. I just took the easy way out and
switched to a file that had not run into the problem. At the time I
felt it was some unique event, and it was easier to switch the
problem file out.

In my case, the stock had undergone a spinoff and reorg. What are
the details in your case?

In my case, if I added a fake AddShares to the problem holding as a
test and downloaded a statement, I would get *2* offers to adjust my
holdings to *different* holding amounts.

What version of Money are you using?

In M07: Tools-> Settings-> BackupSettings
I suggest checking
x Automatically backup my Money file every time I close Money
Save in [a place on your hard drive ]
x Ask me before backing up each time*
x Compress Backup Files
Keep only the _20_most recent backup files [adjust to taste]
(I use 99. default is 4)

Somehow the wrong stock has been associated with that correct CUSIP
in your Money file. So Money keeps offering to update the wrong
stock when it sees that CUSIP on the position.

Note that you need to disassociate the CUSIP on the stock that Money
is trying to *add* -- not the thing that is the actual correct
holding.

Not really. However there is a way to change the CUSIP, and the next
time you download, then Money will ask if the downloaded stock is
the same as something you already have defined. You will say they
are the same, and your CUSIP will be fine.

It's a non-trivial process:
================================================== =================

Disassociate Stock from Money Download

The purpose of this is disassociate a security from the download
process. The problem this cures is that Money associates
downloaded stock by CUSIP. Renaming and/or changing the symbol is
not sufficient to appear as a different security.

Create dis_sk.ofx by cutting and pasting the portions between the
Begin and End lines (below) into a file named dis_sk.ofx.

I suggest making an extra copy of your Money file as a precaution.

File-> Import dis_sk.ofx into Money

Select the appropriate Account from the list.

Select the institution as the actual institution that holds the
account.

You should get the "You have n statements to read" screen. The
account you just imported into should show the name account name
followed by (1). Click that name.

You should get the pop-up that says "Money found the following
investment in your brokerage statement:".

Select "This investment is already in my investment portfolio with
a different name. I use the following investment in my investment
portfolio to track this investment:". From the drop-down list,
choose the stock you are trying to get rid of. Click Next. When
you get the "Are you sure xxxxx is the same investment as yyyy?",
click Yes.

If you get the screen that says "Do you want to change the ticker
symbol for xxxx in Money from yyyy to zzzz to match the statement,
I suggest you click Yes.

Get the screen that says "The positions reported on nn/nn/nn
statement don't match those in you Money account. Do you want to
update your account to match the statement?". I would select No,
but it is up to you. Click Finish.

Now download from your broker for real.

Feel free to suggest improvements to this procedure.

Default Incorrect CUSIP in Money?

Is it possible that a stock in Money could have an incorrect CUSIP? I've got
a problem where one of my financial instiution's is trying to add shares into
Money for a stock I do not own. Without going into everything I've tried so
far, my analysis leads me to believe one of these stocks in Money has a
incorrect CUSIP ID on one of the stocks. If it does, I can't figure out how
to change it. Is there in fact a place in Money where one can verify the
CUSIP used for each stock?
