Two thoughts:

One: you don't have the problems if you don't let the banks and FIs decide
how you want your data in Money. When you Just Say No to downloaded
transaction data and enter the stuff yourself, you get it your way the first
time. It can be done. I have almost 14 years of data and not one entry got
there from downloaded data.

Two: if your Money 401k account has a Money associated cash account, you
should make sure the paycheck portion categorizes the $200 to Transfer:[name
of 401k cash account]. Then when you download the investments, they should
be Buys, and specify the 401k cash account as the source of the funds in the
Transfer: field of the investment transactions. Right now, I'm inferring
that all but the last step is what's happening.

Default Paycheck & Investment Transaction

I have a deferred comp program where every paycheck I contribute a certain
amount, say $200. That $200 is divided according to how I allocate which
funds it will go to in the program's various stock & mutual funds. When I
enter my paycheck into MS Money, the category within the paycheck categories
is "deferred comp - contribution." (Of course I don't know at the time I am
entering my paycheck, excactly how much of that $200 is going to the several
funds I have chosen in the deferred comp program). The deferred comp
program has online updates, so a couple times a month it will show exactly
how that $200 was divided.

The problem is that my "Deferred Comp" Investment account in Money shows my
$200 paycheck "contribution," but also will show the online update
transactions from the program, showing how the $200 was allocated. Thus, it
looks to MS Money as if I'm contributing $400 per paycheck instead of $200
because the Money file gets my paycheck "contribution to deferred comp," plus
later will get the online updates from the program. Sorry if I'm not
explaining this well, but I don't know how to fix this. I cannot simply
"delete" the contribution from the Paycheck distribution. Anyone have
thoughts on this? Thanks much --
