So you are downloading from your broker. The broker will probablysend a RemoveShares of MCD, and an AddShares of CMGB. What you want to do is to make Money think the remove shares is for some previously unknown security, and that the AddShares is for the existing security (MCD renamed to CMGB). So when that occurs, you will want to restore a backup that does not include the new download. Disassociate the MCD from its CUSIP, and then when you download the CMGB, say that it is the existing security. The MCD that gets removed you will say is associated with some bogus security. You will then delete/void the AddShares and RemoveShares. Future positions, dividends, etc will get added to the long-running investment. This should work if you only currently hold MCD, and that CMGB is not yet known to Money-- even in a watch account. If CMBG were known, then things get more complex. And I don't feel like writing that up now. Remember to keep uniquely named backups at each stage so that you can undo anything that is not working for you. So here is the process to disassociate MCD from its existing CUSIP: Disassociate Stock from Money Download The purpose of this is disassociate a security from the download process. The problem this cures is that Money associates downloaded stock by CUSIP. Renaming and/or changing the symbol is not sufficient to appear as a different security. Create dis_sk.ofx by cutting and pasting the portions between the Begin and End lines (below) into a file named dis_sk.ofx. I suggest making an extra copy of your Money file as a precaution. File-> Import dis_sk.ofx into Money Select the appropriate Account from the list. Select the institution as the actual institution that holds the account. You should get the "You have n statements to read" screen. The account you just imported into should show the name account name followed by (1). Click that name. You should get the pop-up that says "Money found the following investment in your brokerage statement:". Select "This investment is already in my investment portfolio with a different name. I use the following investment in my investment portfolio to track this investment:". From the drop-down list, choose the stock you are trying to get rid of. Click Next. When you get the "Are you sure xxxxx is the same investment as yyyy?", click Yes. If you get the screen that says "Do you want to change the ticker symbol for xxxx in Money from yyyy to zzzz to match the statement, I suggest you click Yes. Get the screen that says "The positions reported on nn/nn/nn statement don't match those in you Money account. Do you want to update your account to match the statement?". I would select No, but it is up to you. Click Finish. Now download from your broker for real. Feel free to suggest improvements to this procedure. ========================Begin dis_sk.ofx======================== OFXHEADER:100 DATA:OFXSGML VERSION:102 SECURITY:NONE ENCODING:USASCII CHARSET:1252 COMPRESSION:NONE OLDFILEUID:NONE NEWFILEUID:NONE <OFX<SIGNONMSGSRSV1 <SONRS<STATUS<CODE> 0 <SEVERITY> INFO <MESSAGE> SUCCESS </STATUS<DTSERVER> 20040302 <LANGUAGE> ENG <DTPROFUP> 20030403 <DTACCTUP> 20040201 </SONRS> </SIGNONMSGSRSV1<INVSTMTMSGSRSV1 <INVSTMTTRNRS<TRNUID> ZzzzA1 <STATUS<CODE> 0 <SEVERITY> INFO <MESSAGE> Success so far with stock modification of symbol and CUSIP </STATUS <INVSTMTRS<DTASOF> 20040221 <CURDEF> USD <INVACCTFROM<BROKERID> YourBrokerOrZzzzA2 <ACCTID> YourAccountOrZzzzA3 </INVACCTFROM <INVPOSLIST <POSSTOCK<INVPOS<SECID<UNIQUEID> ZzzzA4 <UNIQUEIDTYPE> CUSIP </SECID<HELDINACCT> CASH <POSTYPE> LONG <UNITS> 0.0000 <UNITPRICE> 42.840 <MKTVAL> 0.000 <DTPRICEASOF> 20041102000000.000[-5:EST] </INVPOS</POSSTOCK </INVPOSLIST </INVSTMTRS</INVSTMTTRNRS</INVSTMTMSGSRSV1 <SECLISTMSGSRSV1<SECLIST <STOCKINFO<SECINFO<SECID<UNIQUEID> ZzzzA4 <UNIQUEIDTYPE> CUSIP </SECID<SECNAME> ZzzzA4 Dissassocated stock <TICKER> ZzzzA </SECINFO</STOCKINFO </SECLIST</SECLISTMSGSRSV1</OFX =========================END dis_sk.ofx ======================== Note. | could you post the "non trivial" way? A spinoff of a stock that already exists should still work for a> (CMGB) shares using a ratio of .8879 shares of CMGB for each share of MCD > exchanged with fractions remaining being convereted into cash (Cash-In-Lieu). > If I traded a portion of the shares of MCD I own, how would I proceed in > Money 2006 to record the transaction? Money 2007 comes closer, but it has the habit of affecting your cash account, which you could then compensate for. There is no totally good workaround if the spinoff does not work for you. http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;179585 describes a method. However your yield calculations and tax form data might not be as you would want. Another way, if you were converting *all* of your MCD to CMGB, would be to rename the stock, change the symbol, and split the shares 8879 shares for every 10000 shares. That gives you optimum performance and tax numbers. However, if you download, it is tricky to cause Money to associate the hidden CUSIP for your existing shares and transactions to the CUSIP for CMGB. There is a non-trivial way. If you decide you want to do that, I could post the way. |

| On nov 12 2006 McDonals (MCD) corp offered a tax free exchange for Chipotle (CMGB) shares using a ratio of .8879 shares of CMGB for each share of MCD exchanged with fractions remaining being convereted into cash (Cash-In-Lieu). If I traded a portion of the shares of MCD I own, how would I proceed in Money 2006 to record the transaction? Spin-off does not seem to fit the build as CMGB already exists as a stock. |
