The key issue with Move is that it assumes that all the variant names were
added to the explicit Payee list. Move won't work for implicit payees.

You'd like to think this would work:
====
Try this (make a copy of your file before hand in case things go awry).

Go to a transaction with a Payee you want to rename to another.

R-click and select the Go To Payee choice.

From there, select Rename.

Type in the name of the Payee that already exists that you want to move the
transactions to.
====
It doesn't. But it will create duplicate identically named Payees that are
not the same Payee. Seem like a violation of good database design
principles. You can even go to the Payees page and explicitly create
separate identically named payees.

So, there's Tools|Find and Replace. You can find the alternate Payee names
and then replace them with the preferred name. ***Be sure and select the "do
not rename" choice when it asks.***

(These steps tested in M07--earlier versions may vary. Play around in a test
file to see what will and won't work.)

The thing that may well help you is to set
Tools-> Settings-> OnlineServiceSettings-> ShowStandardizedPayeeNames
to combine payees that differ only by a number or punctuation. This
may work better after you have combined payees from previous
downloads using Move.

Default How to consolidate payees easily...???

Throught the past 5 years or so of using Money I've gotten quite a few
transactions in my register. Many of the transactions are to the same payee,
but they ended up with different names in Money. For instance, I worked at a
place for awhile and all of the transactions got inserted with Dealexpress
Llc. Well, I left for awhile, now I'm back. Since I've been back I've been
putting them in as Dealexpress, LLC and didn't really realize it was
different before. So now I have a whole bunch of paychecks that came from
the same place but are in as 2 "different" payees.

I noticed the same kinda thing with lots of other transactions too. For
instance, McDonald's. Many of the transactions were downloaded from my bank
website and they include partial address information in the same line with
the name. So I have a whole bunch of different McDonald's entries, but I
just want it to be the name only.

Is there an easy way to consolidate things like this? Any information would
be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
