| Thanks, Cal. The reason this all happened was because I didn't know how to access my 2005 info off the CD. When the CD file wouldn't open, it asked if I wanted to restore and I said "Yes." Unfortunately, my active file got restored. My backup settings are as you advised. My bank downloaded all of my missing checking account stuff. I'll just have to fake it on the other accounts. I think I can still get most of the info from the various institution web sites. (Most of my accounts aren't linked to Money because they are at institutions not supported by Money 2002.) Thanks, again. I think I can pretty well recreate things from here. Lesson learned. -- Jeannine "Cal Learner-- MVP" wrote: - quote - > In microsoft.public.money, Jeannine wrote: > > > When I try to open either one just to look at what they contain, they prompt > > me to restore. | Marilyn & Bob, Thanks for the tip, but I don't buy tax software anyway. I've only filed online for the past 2 years. | You may prove right about the free with TaxCut deal. But I'm pretty confident that there will be deals of some form. Intuit will surely offer some Quicken/TurboTax package deals. Microsoft will have to follow, in lockstep, somehow. I agree they might try to do the freebie with MEss; but there have always been deals on other editions as well. (Maybe not quite so good, but $10 or $20 isn't even a tank of gas, either.) There are two times each year that this NG really picks up with new users. Once after Xmas (bundled on new PCs and new years financial improvement resolvers, probably) and once in late tax season (people saying "there has to be a better way next year" and people getting the tax SW+PFM deals). It used to pick up with the new version release. Not so much anymore. Since maybe M02, what's been to care about? We haven't even had a half-hearted wishlist thread in a while. Seems so pointless. | When you do a Money File Restore, Money prompts to save the restored file in the name of the file that was backed up. If a file with that name already exists, I **recall** that it asks if you are sure you want to overwrite that file. If you say yes, that's it. It's just like copying one Word file over another and saying yes. One file replaces the other. The original file is lost for eternity. Your only hope then is you have a separate backup of the file or a Money backup that is more recent than the one you just restored. Several morals of the story: 1) Make sure your backups have backups. (I.e., multiple generations, maybe even one stored off-site) 2) Have backups in different form (e.g., floppy, CD, flash drive, separate system) and kind (e.g., Money .MBF backup, copy of the .MNY file) 3) Periodically test your backups to make sure they really are. To this, one might add: A) When restoring a Money backup, restore it to a different name than prompted or rename the file you would otherwise restore it on top of. "Jeannine" <Jeannine[at]discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:5C296FB7-2794-4977-B51A-3EAD299174AE[at]microsoft.com... - quote - > Thanks, Joseph. For a more automated way to make multiple backups, see Glyn Simpson's method at http://money.mvps.org/backup.aspx * This has two advantages. You can change the file name occasionally. I like to pick a name something like money061112. Then it is easy to change the name to have multiple backups. The ..mbf extension is automatic. | Cal, Thanks again for your help. I did as Joseph suggested and copied the CD of 2005 back to my hard drive. I can now access it, so problem 1 is solved. I have 2005 back. Now, for the missing parts of 2006, from September to the present. I have two backup files, both .mbf, titled and propertied as follows: My Money Backup 0.mbf 6.45 MB Created: November 01, 2006, 7:43:15 AM Modified: November 01, 2006, 7:43:15 AM Accessed: November 01, 2006, 9:53:48 AM My Money Backup.mbf 987 KB Created: October 04, 2005, 6:54:01 PM Modified: November 01, 2006, 9:46:51 AM Accessed: November 01, 2006, 9:46:51 AM When I try to open either one just to look at what they contain, they prompt me to restore. That's how I got in trouble in the first place. So, to recap, these are the Money files on my computer: 2005 archive copied from CD active 2006 file missing Sept. to Present My Money Backup 0.mbf My Money Backup.mbf Any thoughts? | Thanks, Joseph. I was able to copy the CD to my hard drive and open it, so I have the 2005 records back. Yes, I would love to upgrade to the latest version of Money, but I've been out of work for a while due to health problems and can't afford to. As to the active Money file, the one containing my 2006 records, I apparently restored it to the last backup done in September. I am not sure why it hasn't backed up since then. I used to have it set to backup to my hard drive on exit, but now as I look at the settings, it isn't set to back up at all. I just changed it. So, I will look around for another version of my lost 2006 records. Is there any way to undo a restore? I think what I did was unwittingly restored my 2006 records, my active file, to a September backup. -- Jeannine "Joseph Meehan" wrote: - quote - > Jeannine wrote: > > I archived my records from 2005 to a CD. | Thanks, Cal, but you don't understand what I'm saying. The archive on CD is only for the year 2005. If I were able to open it, it would only contain 2005. I would have nothing from 2006.
