| By the way you need to understand how OEM works. HP (and others) buy Money and other MS products very cheaply and get the Marketing advantage of saying *our PCs come with MS xyz pre-installed". However the quid pro quo of getting the MS software cheaply is that they undertake to supply support. Most OEMs would rather forget this inconvenient, quite costly fact. This is why MS told you to go take a hike. Under the deal where HP bought that software it is very definitely their problem so you need to remind them of that and escalate in HP as necessary. -- Regards Bob Peel, Microsoft MVP - Money For UK tips & fixes see http://support.microsoft.com/default...d=fh;EN-GB;mny. | It was in the process of converting the file to 2006 but then every time I try, I get the same message that the communication failed and to try again and if I continue to have this problem, to contact my financial institution's online service rep. The bank told me that they couldn't help me since they don't interface with Money. | Stacy, So you copied your M2002 file to the new PC and opened Money 2006 and then File - open ? It prompted you for the password and accepted the password and ...... then what ??? Communication error ? huh ? Where ? When it opened , did it reply ~ "updating/converting data to M2006 " ( or something like that ?) Did the file open OK - but failed when you tried to update your accounts ?? Is THAT the comm error ? Can you walk us thru your steps please ? | Hi... I have also used Money 2002 for the past few years. I just got a new computer with the 2006 version already installed on the computer. When I tried to open my backup copy (*.mbf), I put in my password, but then I get a message that says that communication has failed and to try to call again later and then if the problem persists, to contact my financial institution's online banking services. I tried this several times with the same response so I did contact my bank and they said that they do not interface with Money so they were not able to help me. I tried calling Microsoft and they told me that they could help me for $35 but I think that is a little ridiculous since I just bought this computer. They told me that it was a HP problem since HP installed this on my computer. When I called HP, they said it was a Microsoft issue. I got the run around for 2 hours yesterday and I just want help. I am very upset because I need access to these files and I can't seem to get it to work. Will somebody please help me please?!! |

| If it's an older version, you can't. You can back up to a hard drive, then copy to CD. Newer versions support backup to CD, but only if that CD has a driver that permits that. Some users here recommend against that practice, anyway, because rewritable CDs created as a drive letter sometimes are not readable on other machines. That diminishes the value of the backup, for restoring it on a different machine (or rebuilt, if something died). -- Chris Cowles Gainesville, FL "homepatricia" <homepatricia[at]discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:4B62AF95-EA28-4AA3-ACAC-28A499B7CE54[at]microsoft.com... - quote - > I am getting a needed education about this stuff - thanks. | I am getting a needed education about this stuff - thanks. I have yet another question: How do I change the backup drive in Money so I can back up to a CD? Now the backup dialog box only gives me the option of drive A which is the floppy drive. | Patricia, In the future you should use a CD or flash drive or USB drive for backups. Do not rely on 3.5 floppy discs, they are way too unreliable and sometimes cannot be read by other computers. As long as you have safe copies of your working 2002 file on your harddrive and on reliable removable media, you can uninstall 2006 and ignore any such warnings. But since you have a new computer and seem unsure of yourself, I would install 2002 on the new computer first and then copy your 2002 data file to the new computer using the 3.5 floppy and make sure everything works properly before uninstalling 2006 from the old computer. As soon as you get Money installed and working on the new computer make several backups of your working data file on that computer. ![]() Regards Bill Wood "homepatricia" <homepatricia[at]discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:5E1563D8-352C-4ADF-B628-DE675B784BE8[at]microsoft.com... - quote - > I'm not sure what I did, but I am able to open and use my 2002 version > again. > I have backed it up to a 3.5 floppy disk. | I'm not sure what I did, but I am able to open and use my 2002 version again. I have backed it up to a 3.5 floppy disk. The 06 version still giving the same messages and errors. I would like to uninstall the 06 version, but when I went to the control panel; Add/remove programs, I get a message that says If I uninstall the current version of Money I will not be able to open any Money files even if I have an older version of Money. So I didn't continue with the uninstall. What should I do? Also I have a new computer that I want to transfer my data to. Would it work to transfer the 2002 version to the new computer and leave the 06 version on the old one? | Hopefully you saved backup copies of your working 2002 data file which will be named, *.mny. The * stands for whatever you named your data file. If so, close out 2006 and start 2002 and open your 2002 *.mny file. If you did not save a backup copy of your 2002 file maybe you backed up your 2002 file and you have a file named *.mbf. If so you can open 2002 and restore that backup using File/Restore Backup. If you have no backup file or backup copy of your working file and you let 2006 covert your only copy of your 2002 data file, as Cal said Money 2006 made a backup copy of your 2002 file for you and called it *.m10. Simply rename that file *.mny, which means it should be renamed the same name you formerly used for your 2002 working data file. Money 2002 should then open that file. In the future when you experiment with new software make sure you have several backup copies of your working data file somewhere safe on your harddrive and on a CD or thumb drive and that you also let Money create formal backup files with the .mbf extension. I also recommend testing new software on a separate computer so your existing Money installation is not disturbed in any way by the new version. If you are not careful installing new versions of Money weird stuff will happen like password issues. MSFT wants you to behave in certain ways and if you don't watch out, you might get in a mess. Hence a separate computer is most helpful. If anything gets real messed up you can simply delete the new Money installation and your old setup is still safe. Any suggestions? *.m10 If you copy that to a *.mny name and File-> Open the file with Money 2002, it should work. You might want to scan your computer for viruses if you installed from a homemade disk. |

| I have been using Money 2002 Standard for the last 5 years. I just purchased Money 2006 Standard on Ebay and tried to install it. I wanted to transfer my data from the 02 version to the 06 version. Now I can't open either version and am starting to panic. I get a message when trying to open 06 that says it can't connect to my financial institution and to try the call later. I have never connected to my financial instituion and don't know what this is about. When I click OK I get an error message that says Money needs to close. I tried to go into the 02 version and I am told that a version of Money is already running. Once I was asked for a password (I have never used a password to get into Money before and don't have one). At this point I'd be happy going back to the 02 version (if I can access my data) and forget 06! Any suggestions? |
