Default RE: Any ideas? Automatically record % of income in tithe ledger...

Scott,

I'm thinking I would handle this similar to how I handle Employer Matching
401k deposits into 401K Plan:
Wages tab > Wages & Salary: Tithe 10% > add 10% of your wages in.
and to net out this transaction:
in Deductions After Taxes Tab > Transfer to your real or dummy Tithe Account
the same 10%.

Now you've also got an category to keep track of your tithing that you can
link to the appropriate Tax category as well.

Mark's method looks good.

Here is another idea:

Create a custom report of all income that you want to count. Make it
a favorite. Run it and write down 10% of the total.

Create another custom report on the contributions that you have made
so far. Save it as a favorite. Run it. Take the number you wrote
down before minus the number from this report, and the difference is
where you stand in your goal. Make up the difference as you can.

It's not automated, but it may be useful.

Scott,

First, let me applaud you for being faithful to tithing.

On to your question, here are a number of recommendations, in order
of ease of implementation:

1) You could create a custom report that only shows the income
categories that you want to be counted in your tithe. That will
give you a total. 10% is really easy to figure out from the total.

2) You could figure out an estimate of how much you're going to
make over the course of the year, divide that by 12 and then put
that amount in as a scheduled bill. Right before the end of the
year, run the income and expense report and figure out how much
income you had over the year, then adjust your last month or two
to correct it to the number you want.

3) You could create a second checking account at your bank.
Whenenever you receive income, initiate a transfer of 10% to that
account. (This is an easy thing to do if your FI allows you to
initiate those transfers directly through Money.) At the end of
each month, write a check for the entire amount to whomever receives
your tithe.

Of course, I could be completely misunderstanding what you're trying
to do, in which case, maybe you could clarify?

Cheers,
- Mark

Default Any ideas? Automatically record % of income in tithe ledger...

SUMMARY:
I'd like to select all (or some) income types, apply a certain %, and record
that value in a pseudo-account / ledger to see how much I'd like to be giving
my LORD this month. It might be easier to think of it as an I-owe-you
notepad, if you're not familiar with tithing.

Any ideas? I've searched online help, discussion boards, the net, etc with
no success. I will be incredibly grateful for any help.

DETAIL:
Using Money 2007 Deluxe (currently trial edition while I evaluate).

I currently use a really complicated Excel spreadsheet I made. It's all
manual -- I enter transaction information by hand and have various functions
programmed.

Among other things, I have multiple columns for income, checking, savings,
and a little column of what I'd like to give God this month. It is
calculated by applying a percent on the one of the income columns.

Lest someone simply suggest: "Just automatically give the same amount each
month using Billpay" -- thanks for the thought, but no thank you. :-) I
have several irregular sources of income.

So really, I'd like a pseudo account / ledger / notepad that keeps track of
how much I want to give my LORD, based on a % of my current income that
hasn't yet been tithed.

(Since some of you may not know God and His son Jesus...I've promised Him a
certain percent because I love Him, and He delights in all our offerings.
Not just money...especially time and attention! Tithing is giving the
firstfruits of everything God gives you back to God. It's wonderful when
done in love, and sad when done under compulsion or pressure. And lest
anyone be a skeptic-- if you don't believe God is real...I implore you to
sincerely ask Him and see what happens. You may have to wait a bit...but He
will ambush you. For real. :-)

With all that shared, hopefully one of you with more expertise than myself
can figure this out. I'm really stumped. And thank you so much-- I will be
very grateful for any and all help.
