I was unable to import the All Prices All Investments, but there is probably a
minimum of one years worth for each position, and some may have much longer
histories. GM, for example, has 2,078 prices listed.

There is probably no simple Rule of Money File Size.

For some comparative metrics:

My 56MB M07 file has:
41,752 transaction entries as retrieved by MoneyLink for all
transactions/accounts/dates. Note that MoneyLink omits the "root"
transaction of a split. These date back to '98 for the family and back to
March '93 for me. (It took a while to engage my SO in the process.) I have a
smattering of stuff that goes back further added for historical purposes.

5,841 investment transaction entries as retrieved by MoneyLink for all
investment transactions/accounts/dates.

The cash transactions are really 16,794 root transactions, some of which
have a total of 24,314 split elements. How this is computed is hard to
explain in short. (I've written about my Money replacement database
proof-of-concept exercise before.) 21,085 of these roots or leaves have
memos. 1,408 payees are represented; about 100 of these are explicit.

There are 80 investments defined; maybe half to 2/3 of these are valued on a
market that Money can get quotes for.

For the investments, I have a smattering of quotes, have periodically
removed quotes older than several years. I do not get quotes in Money every
day--if the market is dull and depressing, I may go a full quarter. I do,
however, get quotes every day in another form. My Access file that collects
quotes and 401k daily values is about 11MB. The daily quotes table includes
46,928 quote/date key/security key row entries. (One security, 46,928 days
worth of quotes or some permutation thereof.) Though I know there is
anecdotal evidence that quotes contribute greatly to Money files size, I
find it hard to understand how given my experience with this database. I
just copied just this table to its own Access file. File size: 1.66MB. Of
course that's un-indexed and omits the tables with the security and date
keys and so forth. It's still only 1.66MB.

year. My strategy calls for holding 50 positions, and rebalancing yearly. So
it's not like day trading at all. It takes me a few hours a year to do the

Wow, 50 open positions!!! And 80-90% turnover.

I quit my real job and traded options and stocks full time for about 6 years
(1995-2001). I never had more than 2-3 open positions at one time and I
held some of them for weeks. I thought that was pretty exciting but you
must hovering way off the ground!

No wonder your file is huge.

I generally hold about 50 open positions, with an 80-90% yearly turnover. And
I've been doing this since before 1999.

Mine is about 30mb. I use M2002. Can't believe the size of some folks
files - 96mb!!

I have transaction data back to 1980 covering every penny we ever got or
spent and that is scattered over about 60 accounts (bank, credit card and
investment) many of which are quite active.

How could your files be so much bigger than mine? I did export and then
import all my transaction data back into a new Money file a year or so ago
to get rid of gremlins and that operation did reduce my file size somewhat.
I forget exactly but I think it got about 20% smaller.

Maybe you track a lot of investments and your file is full of historical
quote data?

Before conversion and bill nuking several months back, my M04 file was 66MB.
After conversion and nuking-the-bills and several months more data entry my
M07 data file is 56MB. I dream of having a TB...
