Default Re: Spin-off/Money 2006

I assume this was the 1:20 spinoff of idearc (IAR); how are you going to
allocate cost basis?

I had the same problem recording a spin-off today for VZ stock.
I use MS Money Deluxe 2006. [I recently bought MS Money 2007 but I
don't want to upgrade yet since it does not work with any versions of
Pocket Money.]

After spending time on the phone with Microsoft and exausting all
options (including the link above to MS website), I simply decided to
do this manually:
1) Record a Return of Capital transaction for the original stock in the

amount of the cost basis to be allocated to the new stock.
2) Record a purchase of the new stock with the cash coming in from the
ROC transaction.

I had the same problem recording a spin-off today for VZ stock.
I have MS Money 2007 but I don't want to install it yet since it does
not work with any versions of Pocket Money.

I don't think the issue is file extensions, Dick. I had a very similar
problem to your's -- couldn't do a spinoff in M06 even though I tried all of
the fixes outlined in the article. Moved to M07 and the problem went away.
Go figure.......

Yes, but I could find nothing that applied to my situation. I wish I knew
all the file extensions used my Money where I could check to see if all
included in Folder Option.

I did a standard repair on the money file, no luck. I tried a standard
repair on the money portfolio file but it kept asking me for a password.
Since the spin-off is a 1 for 1 I think I'll enter it as a stock purchase
with 0.00 cost.
Thanks for your help! If you come up with something else please let me know,

No, try Standard Repair on your current M06 file (do make a backup first).
Trying M07 is a separate recommendation.
Here's another place to look, Dick: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300226.
My experience is that Bills are more of an issue than payees.

I tried the "Quick Repair" but encountered the same problem, then tried
"Standard Repair" but was not sure what file to repair. Do you mean download
Money ver 7?
As far as I know there is no problem but this with Money ver 6.
Appreciate your help!

OK - two thoughts, Dick:
1. Have you tried to "repair" your Money file?
2. Think about trying M07 - you can download a trial. I know of cases where
spinoffs failed on M06 with the "operation cannotbe performed" message
(though not the control panel follow-up you're seeing), but moving to M07
fixed the problem.

I cannot capture the screen but first a message box appears that says, "This
operation cannot be performed". It the gives you a box to click for more
information.

At the top of the box the http// site mentioned in my last reply appears
across the top of the box in a blue border.
There is also a red circle with a white X. In the box is this message: "This
file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action."
"Create an association in the Folder Option Control Panel".

Here is my sequence: More investing task > Record a special activity Record a spin-off > What companies are involved in this spin-off > When
did spin-off occur > What's the effect of the spin-off > (Recorded
cost....is 0.00) > Spin-off summary > Finish.

When I select finish I get the meaasge to creat an association in folder
option in Control Panel. At the top of the message panel is:
http://g.msn.com/1mcusenredirectors/...dll&filever=15

I tried to connect to this site with no luck.

Something is really messed up -- the message you're getting is for creating
a new file outside of Money -- how are you trying to record a spin-off?

Default Spin-off/Money 2006

We I record a spin-off everything records as it should until I click to
finalize the entry and then I get a message to "create association in
folder option" in Control Panel.

My problem is what new file extension should I create?

Thanks for your help!
