Good. That is an effect of level 1.> It's weird that level 2 doesn't, but whatever. My favorite reports > were wiped out, but that's a small price to pay. - quote - > I googled this group and found at least 2 threads reporting the same

I suggest checking x Automatically backup to hard disk on exit x Prompt me before backing up each time* x Make my file small ... Then periodically, perhaps once per month or more, copy your latest backup (named differently from your earlier backups) to a CDR. With XP, this can be a copy and paste operation. Otherwise use the burning software that came with your CDR drive. I strongly suggest use of a USB Flash drive also, in addition to backing up to your hard drive. They typically act like a big floppy. For a more automated way to make multiple backups, see Glyn Simpson's method at http://money.mvps.org/backup.aspx * This has two advantages in M05. You can change the file name occasionally. I like to pick a name something like money060912. Then it is easy to change the name to have multiple backups. The ..mbf extension is automatic. The other advantage is that you can choose "Don't Back Up, or you change your mind about exiting by simply clicking the X in the upper right of the pop-up box. Money 2007 makes multiple backups that incorporate the date into the filename. |

| Cal, Thanks for the quick response. I fixed it based on your hints. Here's what I discovered. File -> Repair Money File -> Quick File Repair won't fix the problem. Reports -> Change Report Settings -> Reset Reports doesn't exist in 2005. You have to go into the report and click customize to see the button...catch-22. File -> Repair Money File -> Standard File Repair -> Level 2 won't fix the problem. File -> Repair Money File -> Standard File Repair -> Level 1 works! It's weird that level 2 doesn't, but whatever. My favorite reports were wiped out, but that's a small price to pay. I googled this group and found at least 2 threads reporting the same bug. But, neither thread contained a fix. I need to rethink my backup strategy. In an attempt to fix the problem I closed the application and overwrote the last backup file. The backup file was now "broke". Thanks, Brian Cal Learner-- MVP wrote: - quote - > In microsoft.public.money, Brian Gideon wrote: > > > I'm experiencing a problem that I can't seem to work around and I hope > > somebody can help me out. I haven't seen discussions of that symptom. I would do> somebody can help me out. I ran the transaction by category report and > selected category A. Anyone know how to work > around that? File-> RepairMoneyFile-> QuickFileRepair. If that did not do it, and if you are willing to lose custom and favorite reports, I would consider Reports-> ChangeReportSettings-> ResetReports. If that did not do it, I would consider File-> RepairMoneyFile-> StandardFileRepair level 2. |

| All, I'm experiencing a problem that I can't seem to work around and I hope somebody can help me out. I ran the transaction by category report and selected category A. I then went to the category setup screen and moved category A into B. I then went back to the transactions by category report and this time it won't open. Instead, it acts like it's going to open, but then immediately reverts back to the report menu screen. I'm pretty sure it's doing that because the last selected category the report ran was for category A and that category doesn't exist anymore so maybe it's getting confused. Anyone know how to work around that? Brian |
