You can open Money by double-clicking Sample.mny in your install
folder. So you should be able to distinguish whether that problem is
file-related vs install-related.

If you double-click a *.mbf backup file, that will open Money and
start a restore of a backup.

The error occurs when I try to start the program, so at the moment I
can't even get into it.

I'm using Money 2006 - because of the problem I can't get the exact
version number, but the file version of the msmoney.exe executable is
15.0.0.513. Thanks.

I think we need more information: what version of Money? What are you doing
when you get the error?
