| Carl, Thanks for your persistence. Yes, salv.exe did output to a separate .mny file and I was unable to open/convert that one. I tried setting the clock back, opening Money, closing it, then opening the file by double-clicking on it -- same result :-( Nate "Cal Learner-- MVP" wrote: - quote - > Normally salv.exe will put its output into a different file than the > one it tried to repair. > Try closing Money 2004 trial with your clock set back. | I created a new administrative user and logged on as that user and ran Money 2004. I had the same problem as when logged on as myself; the upgrade to the Money file on the flash drive began but then I got the dialog about not being able to locate the file. salv.exe "successfully repaired" the file. Results.log says only "No broken records in the original file" using the standard Level 2 repair routine. I have the same problem trying to upgrade the repaired file. Sorry! | I copied the file to a FAT-formatted USB flash drive. Attempting to open the file from there using Money 2004 resulted in the same error. Renaming and copying back to My Documents and opening from there did the same. The read-only attribute is cleared on both files. Nate "Cal Learner-- MVP" wrote: - quote - > That seems odd. | I should add that per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/182608/ I attempted to repair my Money 99 file even though I have never had any of the symptoms of damage described in that article (until I attempted to upgrade). I uninstalled Money 2004 and re-installed Money 99. When I typed the following in the Start-Run "Open:" dialog Money asked me for my password and opened normally; there was no evidence that a repair was performed: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\Msmoney.exe" –s "c:\documents and settings\nate\my documents\nate.mny" As far as I can tell there is no stand-alone repair tool for Money 99 files as there is for later versions as described in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902466/ After running msmoney -s I un-installed Money 99 and repeated the attempt with Money 2004 with the same results. |

| Thanks for your reply. I un-installed other versions of Money, installed the Money 2004 trial, set the clock back to 12/31/04, and attempted to open my Money 99 file. I received a progress bar indicating the conversion was in progress, then this dialog: "Money cannot locate 'C:\Documents and Settings\Nate\My Documents\Nate.MN7' or cannot open it, possibly because it is a read-only file or you do not have permission to change it or your disk drive is write protected. "If you have chosen the correct file and it cannot be accessed, you will need to click OK and open your most recent backup file. "If the file is being used by another application, close it in the other application and click OK to try again." The file is not set to read-only, and NTFS security has me with full control. I tried both my .mn7 and .mny files and renamed the .mn7 to .mny and tried that. "WORKAROUND" near the bottom of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913108/en-us If you have a *.mn7 file, that would be a copy of your Money 99 file that was created during one of your conversion attempts. Make a copy of that file to *.mny and convert that with the Money 2004 trial. |

| Carl, thanks for your quick reply. I've been unable to work on this problem again until now. Following is what I have done. I installed Money 2005 per the KB article you cite. When I run it I get the message "<file> is corrupted or is not a Money data file. Make sure you are opening a file with an MNY extension. If you have chosen the correct file and it could not be accessed, you will need to open your most recent backup file to access your data." Then I click OK and open an existing Money file, specifying the same one that Money tried to open automatically. I get this message: "Money is updating your software so that you can work with this file. On broadband Internet connections, the update will take a few minutes. On slower connections, it may take several hours. After you receive a message that the update is complete, close and reopen Money, and then open your file from the File menu." I click OK and Money returns me to the Open a File dialog. There is no indication that Money is updating itself and netstat shows no network activity on my broadband connection. At this point my choices are Next or Cancel. So I created a bogus new file in Money 2005. Once I signed in a dialog popped up: "Additional Money program files are now being downloaded to your computer. While the files are being downloaded, you can continue to use Money and other programs. You will be notified when the download process is complete." I clicked OK to close the dialog. This time I could see that there were http connections from Money to msnmoney.com, investor.com, and g.msn.com. I received a message that the updates were complete and re-started Money 2005, now a trial edition. Now when I open my old file with Money 2005 it asks me to sign in, then tells me it will convert the file in a page "About upgrading your Money file." I click Next, get a converting file... dialog with progress bar, then get the same error dialog I did originally: "Money cannot locate..." When I attempt to open my test file, "To run this trial version of Microsoft Money, the system date in your computer must be 2004 or 2005." OK closes Money. So I set my clock back a year, then could not sign in online. Checked work offline, logged in, verified version is now 14.0.10.1105. Again attempted to open Money 99 file with same results (progress bar then "Money cannot locate..." dialog. More info opens this page: http://moneycentral.msn.com/money/20...5101&LCID=1033 I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 with all patches. I turned off the firewall to make sure it was not preventing Money from updating itself. I have never had errors in my Money 99 file (though I have obviously used it a long time). I have reviewed these KB articles: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913108/en-us http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;890393 http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;320193 But have not found the answer to this problem. | I have been unable to convert my Money 99 file even using the intermediate steps of opening in Money 2005. Maybe it's because what I am trying is not possible -- maybe I can only upgrade to a Small Business edition, not "downgrade" to a more recent premium edition. Can someone tell me whether I am attempting the impossible? |
