Thanks, but I started there, before posting here - no help. In the
meantime I've downloaded the 2007 trial and it could open my file with
the password, so I guess I will now have to buy 2007 whether I want it
or not. Talk about a forced upgrade ... oh, well.

Indeed, so the program is uptodate, there must be something about the
PC's setting that prevents Money from accpting the password. BTW, it
also does not allow me to open the file "local only" without the
passport... I am stuck. The same file still works on the old PC.

Sorry to keep on at this and I don't have a copy of M2004 to hand, but if I
do Help > About with M2005 the version number is something like
14.0.120.1105. I would have expected M2004 to be similar. With M2005 it is
the 1105 part of the version number that is absolutely critical. Maybe 2004
is the same (but I could be way off beam!)

I used the same Money install CD as on the pevious laptop, it's Money
2004dlx. Of course on the old laptop it had all the Money updates....

As a test I created a new Money file without password, then clicked to
update Money from the Internet - so I assume by now the program has to
be identical.

Then I tried the Passport login and it would not recognize it again...
I am clueless...

Try copying sample.mny across - which presumably hasn't had a password
applied. If you hit the same problem then it is definitely a version
mis-match.
