There is no known difference that I know of in effect once entered.> Now, what's the difference between "Credit Card Payment: Account name " and > "Transfer to: Account name"? Which one is better for my situation? The "Credit Card Payment: Account name " gives you a shorter list to choose from -- only credit card accounts. Therefore you could use that if you are entering the transaction into the checking account register to get a shorter list. Since you understand what a transfer is, and to give the ability to enter the credit card transfer from with the credit card register, I would use transfer. |

If your register does not say Advanced Register in the upper right,I would select Tools-> Settings-> AccountSettings(global)-> DisplayAllAccountsInTheAdvancedAccountRegister To delete categories or to merge (Move) them, select the category and click a button on the bottom of Banking-> AccountTools-> Accounts&Bills-> Categories&Payees-> Categories |

| Hey Cal, thanks again. Unfortunately, I don't have the category "SPECIAL" anywhere in my list. I go to the Account Register of the checking account, find the transaction, and click it to bring up the drop down menu for categories. I have "EXPENSE" and all the categories under it, and "INCOME". None of these categories says "SPECIAL". I'm using Money 2007 Deluxe, by the way. How do I access this list of categories to add/delete them? Thanks "Cal Learner-- MVP" wrote: - quote - > In microsoft.public.money, MS wrote: > > Hi, thanks for the reply. I see what you mean, but I don't see any option to > > select "Transfer to:". | I too would like an explanation for this complaint which I have seen several times. I use Money 2002 and do not see this problem. But I don't know whether posters/responders are describing it accurately or whether I don't understand something because I don't use a newer version of Money. I buy everything humanly possible with a credit card and pay the card in full every month. My credit cards have at least 100 transactions every month. I download them (direct download or manual depending on bank) from the bank into Money into a credit card account(s). Each transaction is then categorized after I download it. Many transactions are matched by Money from my Bills and Deposits list. When I pay the bill each month I transfer funds from my checking acct to the credit card account. These transfers do not appear on ordinary income/expense reports. How could they, they are not income or expense? I can force these transfers to appear on a special report using report customization if I want to but then they are labeled as Transfers and not grouped with expenses. The transfer that pays the card is not a category - it is a transfer - and a transfer is never income or expense - it is cash flow. Cash flow is reported in Money's cash flow tool where it belongs. Therefore I do not understand the complaint that Money shows transfers as expenses. I have used Money every day since it was first released and never saw this behavior. What specific report are we talking about? And exactly how is the transfer reported and labeled? I do note that in specific Money 2002 reports, transfers (which are listed separately from income and expenses) are then subtracted from income along with total expenses to show a net figure. I don't like that format but it is not possible to create a report that lists transfers used to pay a credit card and the credit card purchases themselves, therefore, no report ever displays duplicate amounts for the same purchase as stated by this post and others. Are we sure that Money versions later than 2002 actually duplicate expenses by adding transfers to pay a credit card to total expenses along with the actual credit card purchases? Go the bottom of the category list under SPECIAL. You may have to> select "Transfer to:". The only category I can choose is "Credit Card > Payments/Transfers" and that's that. Did I not set something up correctly? scroll. After you change your existing payments, I suggest you delete the problem EXPENSE category. It is for people who do not enter transactions for the credit card itself. - quote - > "Spadowski" wrote: > > You say you're classifing the payment as "Credit Card > > Transfers/Payments", but what is the category for that transaction? > > Can't you just set the category to Transfer To: [Name of your credit > > card account]? > > > This is how I do it. | Hi, thanks for the reply. I see what you mean, but I don't see any option to select "Transfer to:". The only category I can choose is "Credit Card Payments/Transfers" and that's that. Did I not set something up correctly? | You say you're classifing the payment as "Credit Card Transfers/Payments", but what is the category for that transaction? Can't you just set the category to Transfer To: [Name of your credit card account]? This is how I do it. I purchase *most* things on the my Discover card. When I pay my bill, I enter the transaction into my register as a payment to "Discover Card", with the category "Transfer To iscoverCard". My checking account balance decreases, and the credit account increases. In the reports, all I see are the expenses made using my credit card, not the credit card payment. Here are three ways I like:> checking account and credit card account. Even though I classify my credit > card payments as "Credit Card Transfers/Payments" the Reports still shows > those payments as Expenses. I purchase everything on my credit card, so it > doubles the amount of expenses I have, instead of showing it as a transfer. > For example if I charge $100 to my credit card, then pay off that credit card > with my checking account, Money shows that I spent $200. $100 on the c/c and > $100 paying the c/c. How can I correct this so it doesn't show credit card > payments as an expense? 1. When you process the first transaction of the credit card payment, set the category as a transfer to the other ( credit card or bank account), or use the equivalent "SPECIAL Credit Card Payment" category. When you process the second transaction,Money should match it. Be careful to not just Accept if Money did not find the match on its own for some reason. Click Change and match it to the transfer you already made if Money did not match it for you. I would consider this the classic of the ways I like. 2. In method 2, don't handle credit card payments as transfers or the pre-defined "Credit Card Payment Instead create one category of "CC payment" or some such. If you define the category as an expense category, expect a warning when you use it to represent the payment within the credit card account -- if you have the warning enabled. Just click Yes in response to the warning. The category should net at zero in reports across accounts, and you can still customize to ignore the category if you like. [this is Bonnie Synhorst's favorite method.]. This method is relatively simple with the least impact if you neglect to change the category. 3. Create a suspense account. I have one I named "In Transit", and I called it a "cash or other" account. Change each of the downloaded transactions into transfer to/from that account. That account will normally have a zero balance except while funds are in transit. Make your credit card payments as transfers to and from that account. This method will appeal to the desire for best representing what is happening. |

| Hi I'm using Money 2007, and I'm trying to view the "Reports". I have a checking account and credit card account. Even though I classify my credit card payments as "Credit Card Transfers/Payments" the Reports still shows those payments as Expenses. I purchase everything on my credit card, so it doubles the amount of expenses I have, instead of showing it as a transfer. For example if I charge $100 to my credit card, then pay off that credit card with my checking account, Money shows that I spent $200. $100 on the c/c and $100 paying the c/c. How can I correct this so it doesn't show credit card payments as an expense? Thanks! |
