Default Re: Should I finally update from 2001 to 2007?

Well I still use Money 2002. I have downloaded the trials each year and gave
up in disgust.

Just downloaded 2007 and am dumbfounded that it seems to be getting worse
each year.

Eg: I have a PayPal account, but because it doesn't support OFX I have to
update it through My Accounts on MSN which requires a Live account. Fine. So
I go through the whole process and it creates a BRAND NEW ACCOUNT. (I didn't
create one, I just tried to setup online services for my existing account)

it advises that some accounts may have been duplicated (well yeah, you
duplicated them!).

Then it suggests to merge - but of course there is no PayPal account to
merge it with.

I check out Knowledge base and it says its because both accounts must have
been listed as ONLINE and therefore I must export all the transactions from
the account I've used all along and import them back into the one that Money
just created.

And: This Behaviour is by design!!!!

---
And when I was setting it up via My Accounts, which you must do, it said I
had accounts that were already on My Accounts and did I want to import them.
Since I hadn't used any of them since the trial of 2006, I said no. So the
setup just finished. I had to say YES and then get another 3 duplicated
accounts.

---
So after my ranting - 2002 is the best one yet!

You might be able to upgrade back to Money 2002 which, in my opinion, is the
best ever, having used all prior versions and tried all later versions
except 2007. The 2002 program is still available on Amazon and eBay.

I bet you could export the transactions from your present version and import
them into a new Money 2002 file. Might be worth a try.

No, it gets worse every year, I deeply regret the upgrades I have made,
before they went nuts on the internet and MSN/Money Central it was a solid
product, not it is internet trash of the worst kind.

There isn't an option to turn off the infernal "Related Links". There isn't
an option to eliminate all of the pages "Investing Home" "Planning Home"
"Taxes Home" that are mostly ads in drag and vectors to MSN sites that are
ads and promoted services.

I have been waiting for clear improvements in the cash flow and budgeting
features -- which still appear to be significantly flawed in all subsequent
versions of Money since 2001. I am reluctant to download any trial versions
since I've heard about *.dll files corresponding to older versions of Money
being corrupted when newer versions are installed and uninstalled.

Each year I hope to hear that the new version of Money really is
substantially improved -- but each year I am disappointed. I don't need to
use bill paying features or connect to my financial institution via Money.
I manually input checking/savings/investment transactions and mainly rely
upon Money to look ahead and see when my checking account is going to get
into trouble. It's also helpful to track net worth. The lifetime planner
in 2001 is flawed because it always shows me needing to withdraw money from
savings for the year --- it doesn't accurately reflect my true cashflow for
each year. Sadly, the very same flaws I see now are still apparently
present in 2007 for cash flow, budgeting, and lifetime planning.

You can always try the free trial. Just make sure you keep a back up of
your file and have your 2001 CD available to reinstall if you decide to go
back because your 2007 file cannot be used by previous versions. If you
have upgraded your PC since 2001, it is probably a good idea to upgrade. If
you have a slow PC, you will notice the new version is slower although 2007
seems faster to load than 2006 especially after cleaning up the recurring
Bills section.

Download the trial, decide for yourself.

Read today's thread on the Budget Tool Review for a sample of Money 2007
issues.

I am using Money 2002 and I have tried each later version through 2006. I
actually bought 2003, 2004 and 2005 but returned each for a refund after I
saw what they were like. I downloaded the trial version of 2006 and ran
that in tandem with 2002 on a different computer for about 3-4 months before
I gave up. I detested 2006 and none of the other newer versions were as
good as 2002 so I never upgraded. I do not think I will even try 2007 based
on what I have read so far. Simply not worth the effort since there are new
limitations and apparently no material improvements. Plus the downloading
feature in 2007 is limited to 2 years in an attempt to force you to upgrade
whether you like the current new version or not.

By the way, you might consider upgrading to 2002, I remember that I liked it
better than 2001 but I don't remember why, that was too long ago.

Bill Wood

Answers in order.

Pop-up ads? Only for itself and rarely at that. Offers? It has them
everywhere in the form of links.

Depends on what you want to do. Download data from an FI that doesn't
support it directly? Yes.

Different? Yes. Improved? Not so much. It's only been six versions. What do
you expect?

Default Should I finally update from 2001 to 2007?

I've been reading this newsgroup for several years -- each year I've read
about flaws in Money 2002,04,05,06 that have convinced me I'm better off
sticking with my 2001 version that runs fine on my xp machine.

Does 2007 continue to pull pop-up ads/offers off the internet?
Does 2007 require a microsoft passport account?
Does 2007 have improved lifetime planning, budgeting, and cashflow features
vs. 2001?
