| I tend to think NOT. The reason I say that is that I think all the "tax exempt" category flagging does is assure that it reports correctly in tax reports. I think (haven't tested it--I'd advise you do so) that TE has no way besides the Before Taxes tab data to figure out what to subtract from Wages tab data to get to a W-2 gross kind of number for federal taxable income. Again, I think you probably want to test this before taking my word for it or before believing what TE reports. You can test it by seeding in the data you want one way or the other in you real data file or in a test file. Then go into TE and look at how it does the math and what totals it gets. It will show you the transaction amounts (one of which is really the transaction amount for the first category on the Wages tab less the total of the Before Taxes tab) it's using. Using a test file will be easier since you will have much less data in it to go back into from the TE data to figure out what it is doing. Let us know what you find. If I don't use Paycheck feature and instead enter my paycheck as a split transaction, won't Tax Estimator work the same way as long as I assign pre-tax deductions to categories that are identified as tax-exempt in Money ? May be I misunderstand the way it works. Here's why I'm asking: I have a PDA program (Cash Organizer) that I sync to MS Money and it's much easier for me to enter all transactions on PDA, since I'm not necessarily near computer when I have some free time. However Cash Organizer doesn't support Money's Paycheck feature. - quote - > Once converted to Paycheck and all entries are on the After Tax tab, you can > select the individual entries, r-click on them, and move them to one of the > other tabs. | The difference between just Split and Paycheck is limited to the UI (user interface--what it looks like) and some of the auxiliary tools that use the tab assignment data--Tax Estimator comes to mind. Tax Estimator, takes the total of the Before Taxes tab and subtracts it from the category on the first line of the Wages tab to get to your W-2 gross. For past transactions--before this year--I'd not worry about changing them unless you really want to. There are NO reports that tell you what tab you put the entries on. It's another case of a place where you can jam data into Money that it's really hard to get back out. Once converted to Paycheck and all entries are on the After Tax tab, you can select the individual entries, r-click on them, and move them to one of the other tabs. Doing this for a large number of transactions will be tedious. | I had about 7 years worth of data entered in Quicken before I switched to Money. All my paychecks in Quicken were entered as "splits" rather than "paychecks". I have about 2 years worth of data to catch up with. I want to track all info on the paycheck - taxes, withdrawals etc. Now, is there any way - for internal / reporting purposes - in which a "paycheck" will be different from "split transaction" ? I tried to convert old data into "paycheck" type but all transactions fall under "deductions after taxes" tab & it looks weird. Thanks ! |
