Of archiving?

1) The archive file is NOT for a limited time period. It's everything. Data
in the archive overlaps the main file left behind. Most people don't expect
that.

2) There's no way to undo it.

3) It doesn't help file size or performance as much as most people expect.

4) All of the logic to reset account beginning balances is not perfect.

5) Many things don't get archived because of things like implications to
capital gains tracking.

6) Once you've done it, there's never any way to look at the data set as a a
whole for trending, payee history, etc.

But that's still an accurate statement of what Archive portends to do. It
doesn't mention any of the side effects/consequences like no turning back.
Nor does it mention treatment of investments--of course there weren't any
back then...

In Money 1, the definition of the archive function was this:

[quote]
"When you archive your file, Microsoft Money backs up the complete file for
archival reference, and then removes old transactions from your current file
to keep it to a manageable size.

When you remove old transactions from the current file, it will be easier to
work with because you work with a smaller number of transactions in your
accounts. The transactions that remain are those you are currently working
with, and the starting balance of each account in the Account Book is
automatically updated to adjust for the deleted transactions."
[unquote]

It's a shame they used the word archive, and that this isn't really that
clear nowadays either

What is the consequence?

I'm still using MS Money 2004. 2005 was HORRIBLE and 2006 was a bit strange trying to get setup. I started to move my bank account just so I could start fresh in 2006, but even then I was having some problems. Finally I just went back to 2004.

Every new version something always gets screwed up. MS should let be. Would
be nice if they spent some on developing or fixing the ARCHIVE function. The
worst thing they could have done was to have this function from the start
without informing us about the consequences of that function.

Every new version something always gets screwed up. MS should let be. Would
be nice if they spent some on developing or fixing the ARCHIVE function. The
worst thing they could have done was to have this function from the start
without informing us about the consequences of that function.

These guys

say 7/27/06. They've had a good track record over the last several years.

Perhaps the better question is who cares? And why? Do you not have an
existing version or are you expecting something special from M07?
