Default Re: upgrade 2003 to 2006?

I also bought M$Money 2006 Deluxe at Wal-Mart for $19.00.
Everything went fine.
I like the new interface much better than the 2003 Deluxe version.
Everything transferred over just fine.
Just a thought!

I recommend NOT storing your data in the program directory. Instead, create
a subdirectory in "My Documents" and put it there. It's easier to back up
critical data that way and is good practice, in general.

I use both M2004 and M2006.
Just pay attention during the install and do NOT take the defaults.
By default (the store-bought version) will see your old info, make a
backup and Update the data file for M2006.
SO, what I did was - backup your Existing C:\prg files\ Money Folder to
another drive / Cd etc ( I do that anyway to have a good copy). Then
during the install , do NOT take the default folder - choose CHANGE and
install the files to "C:\Program Files\Money2006 " (some obviously
different name.) Let it do the install. When it's done, copy your
existing .mny file to that new C:\Program Files\Money2006 folder .
Maybe call it Trial.mny or something to distinguish it for you from the
old one. Now open Money 2006 - File - open - and browse to C:\Program
Files\Money2006 and select that file you just put in there. Money will
ask for a password if you have one, then announce" updating to M2006
format" - then go through the rest of your setup - do a SAVE AS and make
sure that it's in the C:\Program Files\Money2006 folder area.

As for trial conversion, as I said earlier - they'll charge you more
than buying it at Walmart AND at retail store you'll have the CD if your
PC disk fries.

Optional - if you don't understand - nevermind.
With both on there, you MAY notice when you have M2003 open and you
download from your bank that it might not automatically import as it
used to OR M2006 may ask to open when you download. ( since it will by
default associate .mny files with itself).
What I do/ have done as I've migrated along : from my bank's website I
download the file and saved to my PC. Then I can open it from Money 2004
or M2006 . From Money - file - import and browse to the file. Depending
on your bank, you might also have quicken version files available to
you. I have also associated the qfx (?) extensions with one version of
Money and .mny with the other version. That way the download triggered
the appropriate program to open.

I got M2006 deluxe at Walmart in Salem. NH a few weeks ago for $19 - no
rebates.

As for upgrading .... you might want to read thru old notes here - a lot
of folks do NOT like M2006. Is there anything in M2003 that you
wish/hope will be in M2006 ? ( my guess - whatever you wish for isn't in
there)

As for "buying it after downloading it". I've seen too many people here
complaining that when their hard drive crashed they couldn't get it to
reinstall - and/or a new license ( 'cuz they lost the email that had the
license info when their disk crashed). I ALWAYS buy programs so that I
get the CD.

You can have both 2003 and 2006 on your computer at the same time,
installed into different folders. You can have them open, one at a
time. It is important that you pay attention during the Money 2006
install. Money 2006 will offer to uninstall the older version, and
you must change the default selection to decline that offer.

The only other caveats I can think of are the last-installed is set
up with the file associations, so when you download an OFX or QIF,
the last installed gets fed the file. To feed the file to both,
save the file to disk, and do File-> Import to both. Just clicking
a link sends the file to the last-installed. You could manually
adjust the associations, or could reinstall 2003 to reset the
associations. You could also create an XP restore point that you
could use to restore the associations.

Copy your Money 2003 file to another filename such as Mon06.mny.
If there is a Passport on the file, open the copy with Money 2003
and remove the passport before converting. It may not be good to
use the same Passport on both. There may be no problems with that.
I am just not sure, but others report that my worry is unnecessary.
You can add a DIFFERENT Passport to that file if you like, but I
would not have the same Passport on both files.

One more thing: if when you check
http://www.microsoft.com/money/bankonline.aspx you see that your
bank is listed as one where "service is provided by a third party",
there is a current outage that will keep that from working at the
moment. So hold off until the
http://moneycentral.msn.com/common/networkstatus.asp page does not
have the "MSN Money synchronization in Money 2005 or Money 2006"
status as not being fixed.

If your bank is listed without that "service is provided by a third
party" description, then that outage should not affect your ability
to download transactions from your bank.

Yes. However you can also get Money 2006 Deluxe quite reasonably at
stores. Sams and probably Costco offer it without a rebate.

Default upgrade 2003 to 2006?

I am now using the standard version of MS2003. My bank suggests I upgrade
to 2006.

Question: Can I download the trial version of 2006 and have both on my
computer at the same time? Will 2006 destroy the files and data of 2003?

I believe the 2006 delux version is available for download. If I decide to
keep 2006, can I replace the 2006 that I download with the "2006 standard
version CD" that I buy in the store?

Thanks!
