| If Money hung while trying to write out the Money file and I rebooted my machine not knowing there was a hung process, maybe that would explain it? I do know that I did reboot between the time I last used Money and the time I noticed the file was missing. I have seen Money hang before, just never had a missing Money file... | I have the same file since 95 and fingers crossed - no problems. | I had the same thing happen to me today. I had just exited Money, it did it's compression/backup thing. I backup to another computer on my home network. As soon as it was done I clicked on the .MNY file as I needed to get back in. I got a file not found error. Refreshed the Explorer view and sure enough it was gone and there was a .TMP file in it's place. On a hunch, I looked in my Recycle Bin and there was the file, which I was able to restore. Weird. I've been having more and more trouble with Money lately. I suspect my ..MNY file may be corrupted. I've been running on the same one since 1995 (upgraded every year to a new version of Money). I think at somepoint I'm going to have to start over fresh. |

| It does sound strange like losing power during the time it was rewriting or renaming the file. Do you recall having the system execute a forced Scandisk when booting? All we can do is play guessing games. I would chalk it up to some glitch and write a .mbf upon every exit for awhile. arthur == On Sun, 28 May 2006 22:08:31 -0400, "JohnA" <John[at]TheAtas.org-spamguard> wrote: - quote - > Hi Arthur, > Thanks for your reply... | Hi Arthur, Thanks for your reply... OK, so it performed the backup, then on exiting, it wrote the Money file by renaming it, and then writing out the current copy? So why didn't I end up with a Money file like I do all the time? There was no sign of anything going wrong, no application aborts. I even checked the Event Log and didn't see anything... -- John "arthur" <trash.all.spam[at]xoxy.net> wrote in message news:ccbk721102liv40t8pjtuofn0cjpv9ukse[at]4ax.com... - quote - > Is it possible your backup procedure does some trick like renaming to > prevent access when doing backups? | Is it possible your backup procedure does some trick like renaming to prevent access when doing backups? More likely the system or application renames before overwriting the file. My guesses. arthur == On Sat, 27 May 2006 14:48:10 -0400, "JohnA" <John[at]TheAtas.org-spamguard> wrote: - quote - > Hi, > Today, when opening up Money, it complained that my Money file was missing. > Sure enough, an examination showed that the Money file was not there. | Hi, Today, when opening up Money, it complained that my Money file was missing. Sure enough, an examination showed that the Money file was not there. What was there, however, was a ".tmp" file that was roughly the size of my Money file. I renamed it and Money opened it up sucessfully without any apparent problems. However, the last time I had exited Money, I had performed a backup (do this every time) so rather than chance a problem with the tmp file, I just restored the Money backup. Does anyone know how this can happen - this is rather disconcerting. Going through my system backups, I can see that the day before the Money file was there, and the last day I used it, it is gone and the tmp file is now present. -- John |
