| My file is 30MB with more than 20 years of data and it is plenty fast. I guess you have a lot of stored stock quotes. I do not try to store quotes on more than a few securities in Money. Money will handle all your trades with no problem but it is probably not a good idea to store quotes wholesale if the large file size bothers you. Never archive, it has no advantages and many disadvantages. You can make your file a lot smaller by exporting all accounts and then importing them back into a new Money file. This is a big pain but it works and cleans up your file beautifully. You will loose all stock quotes. I did the export/import and I did not miss the lost quotes since I use other sources for that info. I would not even consider starting a new file from scratch in Money or any other program. You loose the ability to make useful reports unless you constantly open your old file which would drive me nuts. I would never use MSN for anything and especially never try to sync my data. I keep my data safe and clean on my own computer and I keep lots of backups. To me the current version of Money is no better than 2002 which I still use. A serious investor probably would not use Money for portfolio analysis. I used an Excel spreadsheet when I traded full time for 5 years. There are free places like Bigcharts and Yahoo Finance to get daily updates for your portfolio and most brokers also provide that service with real time and daily updates. You are probably better off staying with Money. Quicken is the only realistic alternative and I doubt that it is any better than Money - certainly not enough better to justify all the work of a changeover. I looked hard at Moneydance but it is still not anywhere near as good as Money or Quicken. Good luck. Copy that to jpr03.mny, and you can File-> Open that file with Money 2003. Was that the answer you wanted? It has nothing to do with your file being big. In that regard, I suggest you not archive. Reducing the number of securities that you collect quotes for will slow your file growth. |

| Hi, I've been a loyal Money user since the first version. My money file is now 52mb. Archiving doesn't help (goes down to 41), probably because there are so many investment transactions in there and they don't get archived. I am currently using 2003 and tried to upgrade to 2005, but my balances all ended up incorrect. Any way I can continue with my current file or do I have to start from scratch with a new file? I'd like to stick with Money, but if I have to start all over again anyway, it would be a good time to look at other programs. A few years ago, everything was great, I loved Money, and really loved the portfolio manager. Then this all seems to have fallen apart with synchronization problems with MSN money, etc. Besides wondering what to do, I'm wondering if serious investors are happy with the current version of Money? Is there a simple place to get daily updates on portfolio performance without opening Money? Thanks. -jpr |
