Default Re: MS Money Trial wont die...

That would be me, although I don't download from ML -- don't remember why,
but I think it was a set up problem long ago.

It's not a real Visa, as in credit card. It acts like a debit card to access
funds in your cash account. So it is no more a separate account than your
regular debit card is from your checking account at your local bank. Both
have a national credit card logo so they will be accepted in the same
manner.

Try using the "Visa card" to "charge" something when there are insufficient
funds in the "sweep" account. It will give you the same message as your ATM
card does when your checking account is low.

That's why the "Visa" transactions download as cash transactions for the
investment account. They are.

As to why you are "unable to assign categories," are you using Advanced
Register?

I was thinking you were saying that checks and credit card
transactions would download into the Cash Transactions portion of
the investment account register. If that is the case, you can
certainly assign categories, memos etc., to each transaction.
Displaying the register in non-single line mode may help make that
clear. Ctrl+T will toggle between single and non-single line mode in
the registers.

I am not experienced with credit card transactions showing up in the
Cash Transactions portion of the investment account register.
However having checks there is pretty common. And the concept would
be the same.

Somebody with experience with ML may come by. I note that
http://www.microsoft.com/money/banko...okeragesOnly#7
says that the information for ML is accessed via web page.

The account register does not allow me to assign categories, memos etc.,
to each transaction which makes for generating meaningful reports.
(Strange btw, because I can remember using a much older version of Money
that seemed to allow this)

Why is this a problem?

If its important to you that your software work like Quicken did,
then Quicken might be what you need.

Do you see the credit card transactions when you go to the web site
of your mystery broker?

Thanks for the info...

My problem is that the software downloads my VISA transactions and
places them in the investment account ledger rather than in a separate
LINKED VISA|Checking account.

I'm at-sea on how to do this (Quicken 2006 did this automatically)

First, I would increase the number of backup files Money 2006 keeps
in case you want to undo something. See backup setting suggestions
below.

Then set your broker up for online access. Be prepared to then merge
accounts right away if you already have your broker set up. We don't
know who your broker is, so we can't point out known quirks.

If the credit card does not get set up during that process, then set
it up next.

See Banking-> AccountTools-> ManageOnlineServices or
AccountList-> ManageOnlineServices.

====================backup setting suggestions==================
In M06: Tools-> Settings-> BackupOptions
I suggest checking
x Automatically backup my Money file every time I close Money
Save in [a place on your hard drive ]
x Ask me before backing up each time*
x Compress Backup Files
Keep only the _20_most recent backup files [adjust to taste]

x Perform scheduled backups every _7_ days
Save in [a USB flash drive location]
x Ask me before backing up each time*
x Compress Backup Files
Keep only the _2_most recent backup files [adjust to taste,
but Money 2006 does not automatically trim to USB as it should]

Then periodically, perhaps once per month or more, copy your latest
backup (uniquely named by Money) to a CDR. With XP, this can be a
copy and paste operation. Otherwise use the burning software that
came with your CDR drive.

It happens. Thanks for the feedback. I can't help with your other question.
I don't download anything beyond quotes. I think I get better data with less
hassle and only slightly more effort that way.

You were right! I was put off by the "Trial Version" on the Setup Screen
(come on MS, you can do better than this!) When I closed and reopened
the program, my $30 purchase came to life. Thanks!

Now my problem is finding out how to download data from my Brokerage
account that has a linked checking/VISA facility. Any suggestions would
be gratefully appreciated.

Did you try the Passport login steps after opening the new file or just
expect trial version to be gone at the setup screen???

Okay. Did this and it worked thru this step BUT I see that the setup
page defaults to Trial Version PRIOR to setting up accounts etc.

After assigning the same Passport you used when you bought

No doubt, but one would think that a company like MS would get it right
(BTW Quicken has)

Here's what I'd try: rename you regular file so that Money will not find it
on startup. Start Money. It will ask to find a file or create a new one.
Create a new one. After assigning the same Passport you used when you bought
the license, skip all of the remaining setup steps--can't remember the
choices, but you should be able to figure it out. When you get done and it
gets to a home page, do an Internet Update. Assuming the online licensing
problem of several weeks back is still solved, this should get you there.

Next time buy the CD. Skip these hassles.

Default MS Money Trial wont die...

Prior to installing my purchased and downloaded MS Money 2006, I
uninstalled via Add|Remove, the 90-day trial version on my PC.
(WindowsXP|SP2)

However, with the new, non-trial Standard version installed, I still get
a warning on application launch that the Trial version has expired etc.,
and the application disappears from the screen.

What gives? How can I rectify this annoying situation?

Thanks!
