| Well, if he can deal with XP vs. whatever he was using when he started with Money v. 3, then the leap in versions of Money should be pretty straightforward, by comparison. Saying Mv3 is "just fine for my needs" is kinda like saying a '36 Packard is just fine for your needs. Sure it is. Four wheels and an engine. Just like a Mercedes-Benz S55 AMG. But try to get parts for the Packard. Personally, if this is a client, I think you have an obligation to be sensitive to things like supportability. From this standpoint, going to M04 ($20 after all of the rebate nonsense) is a much better answer. There is a time-limited trial at http://www.microsoft.com/money -- be ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN to understand how it upgrades data files and preserves the backout path. Money files are NOT backward compatible. Not 1 version, not 9 versions. Many people think (I'm sure the designers would claim as well) that half of the work since Mv3 has been geared to making Money easier to use. In particular, getting rid of the old MDI interface was aimed directly at "ease of use." (Or, "dumbing down" depending on how you look at it.) Will Mv3 work on XP? Tough to say. It might. I don't recall any reports on this, but you might search the archives for the group at http://groups.google.com. Will Mv3 Access files over a network? My bet is that it will only do it via mapped drive letters and not via UNC paths. That's also an educated guess. It may work, it may even work reliably. But I would never> Hi, > I have a client who is using money 3 for personal purposes for keeping track > of shares and dividends and such. Same answer. Don't do it. Certainly simultaneous accesssharing the file > and using it on different computers (it would not have to be at the same > time).? is asking for trouble; much preferable to have the Money file local. Can always move it around over the network. - quote - > Otherwise, can you suggest a program that can deal with
Money 2004 is easy if you limit yourself to the few neededbuying/selling > shares and dividends, displaying reports on such, etc. which is easy to use > for a novice computer user? operations. - quote - > Regards, > Benjamin Gardiner > hayhurstNOMOREPSPAM[at]intekom.co.za > Note: Please remove the NOMORESPAM from the e-mail address if you reply. > . |

| Hi, I have a client who is using money 3 for personal purposes for keeping track of shares and dividends and such. I realise Money 3 is very old (looks like it was for windows 3.1!) but he does not wish to upgrade to a newer version of money which is more complicated and has many features which he will never use. My questions are: 1] Will money 3 work reliably in XP? 2] Has anyone tried using money 3 over a network? i.e. sharing the file and using it on different computers (it would not have to be at the same time).? Otherwise, can you suggest a program that can deal with buying/selling shares and dividends, displaying reports on such, etc. which is easy to use for a novice computer user?
