When you get a report customized the way you like, you can save it as a
Favorite Report.

Thank you so very much. This is the information I needed and it got me right
to the locations I was looking for. Every year I stumble around for hours
trying to get these totals and it is always so difficult to get to the right
place in the quickest way. I printed these instructions and will guard them
with my life. Thank you both.

There are many reports available. There are more if you
Reports-> ChangeReportSettings-> SwitchFromEssentialToAdvancedReports

You can select a report and click Customize. There are various tabs
that allow you to change various things about the reports.
Transactions by Category would probably be useful to you.

I might add that a Transactions by Category report customized to limit the
dates to your tax year might be a lot more helpful for doing taxes.

If you are not using Advanced Reports, try that and report back. If you are,
try customizing the Spending by Category Rows & Columns|Columns to Months or
Years and Rows to Categories or Subcategories. Spending by Payee can be
customized similarly.

How can I get each of the Category or Payee totals by the month and or the
year? I get so frustrated. Tax time is frustrating because I can't get the
