That cleared things up a lot for me -- thanks! Dumb question... The part about Microsoft Money users. The website mentions this change: If you are a Microsoft Money user: All of your information will continue to be available on your local computer. On this website, you will still be able to view your accounts and pay bills through MSN Bill Pay. You will no longer be able to edit your account data or view your spending and budget data. Do you know what is meant by the last sentence? i.e., now, if I want to change an account name I have to do it at the web site. If I make the change in Money, and sync, it reverts to whatever is at the web site -- if I change it there, the next sync it shows up the way I want it to in Money. If the sync has been changed to work when initiated on my local file, it doesn't matter -- if not, I won't be able to change the name of an account. Is an account name included in 'you will no longer be able to edit your account data' ? Thanks again for the info. "Dave J." <v_8djewe[at]msn.com> wrote in message news:eN6x33AaGHA.4248[at]TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... Hi All, I hope this clears up any questions about the different programs and the website. Microsoft Money These items are three seperate entities. Microsoft Money is a locally installed program on you computer which creates and stores your personal finance information in a "Money File" which is similar to a database. This Program also has the ability to syncronize some of the data contained in this file with MSN Money. Once this Sync is enabled the sync feature will ensure that any new data in Microsoft Money is sent to MSN Money and any new data on MSN Money is added to Microsoft Money. MSN Money Plus! This is one of the components of the MSN 9 Internet Software the "MSN Butterfly". Since this software requires an MSN Subscription the decision was made way back when to modify the look to suit the browser and add in some extra features that were available in Microsoft Money. This used to be available to MSN Premium subscribers. Since things have changed drastically over the last few years this is not the case any longer. MSN Money Plus! is now available to all MSN Subscribers. This software also creates a local file data file. This program automatically syncronizes with MSN Money as this program is totally web oriented and sync cannot be turned off. MSN Money(https://moneycentral.msn.com) This is a website! That you can interact with to store and gather udpates from you bank. So you can add accounts, remove accounts, update accounts, use the Investment toolbox to view add modify yor investments. At the center of all of this is this web site. Previously someone mentioned Yodlee and Cashedge. Without the use of this website and the sync feature account updates from these providers would not be possible. Syncronization This process attempts to ensure that the same data is held in all locations. If it is in the money file then it is synced to the website. if it is in the MSN browser then it is synced to the website. If it is on the website it will sync or bring in any new information from there into either Microsoft Money or MSN Money Plus. If you are using all 3 then the sync feature will send this information from both programs to the web and will pull in any new information. I don't think there is a big deal there.

So MSN Money doesn't let me create an account without specifying an FI that's in their list--mine isn't? (Did MSN Money Plus?) Also, what's it mean to say that MSN Money eliminates the feature from MSN Money Plus that provides "Ability to access data offline"? Isn't this the reverse side of the application's Sync with the Web feature? If they eliminate that feature, does that mean that they break Money Sync with the Web for people coming at this from Money the application rather than Money the web service? If somebody just bought M06, thought "gee, I'll try Sync with the Web," and did it, were they an MSN Money Plus user or an MSN Money user? CashEdge is another Yodlee-style screen scraper? I guess I'm trying to infer some greater meaning from these tea leaves... So, a Money Plus user is not going to lose anything from the My Accounts area. In fact they'll gain the ability to add accounts that Yodlee doesn't, since MSN Money also supports accounts accessed via CashEdge in addition to those accessed via Yodlee (as does Money 2006). I know they both let you access the Portfolio Manager does let you create investment accounts and enter Buys, Sells, etc without accessing your actual broker accounts.

Cal's MSN Money network status link revealed another tidbit: --- Change of service - discontinuing MSN Money Plus An important change is coming to the MSN Money service. MSN Money Plus will be replaced by the MSN Money service, starting early in July. After the transition, much of the account information you currently have stored by MSN Money Plus will be available through the MSN Money service. Why is MSN making this change? A large majority of MSN Money Plus subscribers do not use the features that are exclusive to MSN Money Plus. Most of the features and functionality of MSN Money Plus are currently available on the MSN Money website. Additionally, MSN Money supports more financial institutions than MSN Money Plus. How will this affect me? The online MSN Money service offers most of the familiar features in MSN Money Plus, such as banking, investing, and news. However, the following features will not be available after the transition to MSN Money: Spending by category Spending by payee chart Favorite category thermometers Setup and tracking of monthly income and expenses Budget vs. spending reports Personal tax information W-4 tax withholding estimator Ability to access data offline If you use these features, you must copy this data to another program or service before June 28th, 2006, to avoid losing this data. After the transition is complete, you will be able to access your account information through the MSN Money service. --- I'm not at all familiar with MSN Money or MSN Money Plus or why both exist or how both are offered, but this is an interesting tidbit. - They're dumbing down the web offering, removing many features that are similar to those in standalone Money. - They're doing it because "A large majority of MSN Money Plus subscribers do not use the features that are exclusive to MSN Money Plus" - They're doing it at the end of June. I wonder if there is any relationship between this and M07/Mxxxx?
