Because the data rule is that Transfer cannot target a Loan. Only Loan> the loan accounts not show up when trying to setup a transfer? Payment can target a Loan. Start a Loan Payment and the Loan Accounts will be offered. - quote - > If they did,
A Loan Payment will do two of the entries for one of the loans. But you> I could do a split with 4 entries considering I had two loans (one split for > principal and one for interest for each loan). can't have a Loan Payment with two targets and you can't have a Split with a Loan Payment inside of that. That's just the way Money enforces their DB design at the UI. - quote - > It's unfortunate a free
Not really. There are many things GnuCash cannot do. Run on Windows to name> product, GnuCash can do this with ease. one. |

| I have the exact same problem and I wasted four hours trying to figure it out until I disovered this website. Microsoft support was no help as they could not understand my need. Is double entry accounting not being used? Why do the loan accounts not show up when trying to setup a transfer? If they did, I could do a split with 4 entries considering I had two loans (one split for principal and one for interest for each loan). It's unfortunate a free product, GnuCash can do this with ease. | As outlined in my previous response, the limitation comes from something pretty fundamental to Money's database design. Indeed, it's a limitation that has existed in 14 versions now since the early 1990s. Given how often this issue doesn't come up, I wouldn't think a better solution is likely anytime soon. Dick, thanks so much for your suggestion. I had thought of something alongthese lines, but am definitely hoping a more elegant solution exists. So much of Money's target consumer group carries loans from Sallie Mae -- hoping we can get something that works better. Thanks again for taking the time to help! |

| Loan Payments are Split and Splits cannot, in turn, be Splits. That's where your problem comes from. Here's how I'd handle it. - Create a cash account "(split to loans)" (if you already have a cash account for something like pocket change, you can use it instead) - Schedule then enter your consolidated payment as a category Transfer:[name of acct from above] - Schedule then enter however many separate Loan Payment:[name of loan accts 1 to n] transactions as are required to be paid from the cash account from the first step--these should add up to the same amount as the consolidated transfer After each cycle, the balance of the cash account should be unchanged. It's not elegant, but it will work. | I am a new user of Money and am trying to set up my student loans. Like most government-backed education loan portfolios, there are multiple loans with different terms, variable rates, etc serviced with one payment to a single service provider -- Sallie Mae. I send Sallie Mae one check each month. I have set up each loan in Money (there are four) as a separate account thinking I could 'split' the single payment from my checking account into four pieces. But Money will not give me the option to split checking transaction into multiple loan payments. I have the option in the initial transaction edit to set up a loan payment to any one of these accounts. However, when I click 'Split,' the loan accounts I set up do not appear in the 'Category' dropdown menu. Further, if I attempt to change the checking transaction to a 'Transfer' rather than a 'Withdrawl', none of the loan accounts appear in the list of accounts I may transfer to. Please help! Loans serviced by Sallie Mae afflict half of all college and grad-school graduates and need to be set up in detail to make this exercise worthwhile. Thanks! |
