| The short date format is the least of your problems. Money of a given localization will not open a data file created with a version for another localization. Period. Was the M04/M06 upgrade attempt from you M98 files an attempt to cross localizations? If so, consider it a dead end. | Ron, Money is not backwards compatible. So anything created by version N+1 cannot be read by version N. Or in this case a M04 file cannot be read by M98. Also Money is heavily regionalised and a file created by a UK version of Money cannot be read by a US version and vice-versa. -- Regards Bob Peel, Microsoft MVP - Money For UK tips & fixes see http://support.microsoft.com/default...d=fh;EN-GB;mny. | Just a little update. I noticed that this time M04 created backup files with extension .mbf I uninstalled M04 and installed M98 and tried to open this backup file. Still no luck. The program starts to open the file - progress bar gets halfway up (where the progress bar says compacting file) and then hangs. |

| Hi Dick, I read the article and changed the short date format to what it was before but still no luck. M04 is saying it cant find the file or its read only, however it is still making backups with .MN6 extension. "Dick Watson" wrote: - quote - > That's very interesting. | That's very interesting. See http://umpmfaq.info/faqdb.php?q=1 and see if it makes any sense in the context of your case. The .MN6 is consistent with the file to be upgraded being recognized as a Money98 file. I do remember that M98 expanded file size exponentially AND didn't initially support spanning a backup of these large files to floppy. That was a pretty clueless combination. | Dear Dick, once again thanks for your patience. All of my files have the .MNY extension - even the backups created by money98 and all of them are NOT read only files. |

| I'm not sure I have any ideas, but let's clarify something for others reading who might: do you have both a .MNY and a .MBF version fo the same data file? Did Money 2006 report the same "money cannot locate xxx.mny or cannot open it, possibly because it is a read only file or you do not have permission to change it or your disk drive is write protected." when trying to open/restore both the .MNY and .MBF format files? If these went through a CD-ROM, make sure that both files copied back to the hard disk are set to be NOT read only in their file properties. Do not try to open the file/restore from the backup file directly from the CD-ROM. The former definitely won't work. I'm less sure about the latter, but would avoid it to be sure. I'm also wondering about an intermediate version upgrade attempt--where you go through the M04 trial version. See http://umpmfaq.info/faqdb.php?q=180. I'm also wondering about lots of voodoo issues like Safe Mode operation to do this, doing this as Administrator, etc. Anybody else with more experience in these areas want to dive in here? | Hi Dick - i downloaded and installed M06 but it could not open or restore the money file i have on computer. Lvl 1 and 2 restores both gave me message "no broken records in origional file". When i tried opening the backup i have on cdrom and a copy of the backup i placed in money folder both gave me the message "money cannot locate xxx.mny or cannot open it, possibly because it is a read only file or you do not have permission to change it or your disk drive is write protected." This is not the case. Thanks once again for your patience and awaiting your reply. |

| So, you used a restore Money Backup file rather than just copying your Money data file to, say, a CD and then copying it back. Now's probably not the best of times to tell you this, but Money can make backups it can't deal with from data files it deals with just fine. Why it would do this is unknown, but the fact that it does has been reported repeatedly. This is why any backup strategy isn't until it's been tested. Also this is why many of us recommend using a copy of the actual Money file preferentially to anything with the backup file in cases like this. Agreed, it shouldn't have to be this way. But it is. As to never having downloaded/installed the fix, do not be so sure. If you **ever** did an Internet Update, only one click would have separated you from installing the fix that Money automagically downloaded. Over eight years it seems entirely possible you could have forgotten such a click. Many people forget what version of Money they were actually using prior to the reinstallation. My recommendation: Download and install the trial version of M06. See if it can restore/upgrade your backup file. If it doesn't work, you're not out much besides having to uninstall it and reinstall your obsolete version, should you choose to do that. If it does work, check the name of the reversion file that the version format upgrade leaves behind. Report the extension here. It will be something like .MN8, .MN9, .M10 or similar.
