Yes, correct, and no, not quite. What I do is open money. As you say
last file opens. I then click File > Open and pick the file I want,
or File > previously opened file. Then I click the update widget.

My point was that money knows the account number to which each update
applies and if no match will complain. At that point one can File Open to the correct file. IOW, money will not blindly apply to wrong
accounts unless you so tell it to mess up.

In spite of Arthur's comment saying it will magically work, I think the
download file will be "applied" to whatever Money file you open next.
When you open the Money program (from the Money shortcut or EXE) it will
(at the same time) open the last Money data file that you had opened; if
you open from the shortcut (icon) or EXE you don't get a chance to tell
it which data file to use.

After you open the Money program, you could then open a different Money
file, but it's probably too late if you wanted the download applied to a
different Money file.

You might be able to download from your bank with Money closed, then
double-click a Money data file to have the Money application open using
that data file. Then I suspect it will be that data file that your
downloaded bank information will get applied to.

I think the downloaded bank information just gets saved in a file, and
the action for opening the downloaded bank file (the OFX file) -- Which
in Money '03 is a small program that saves the file and then asks you if
you want to start Money if it's not running -- that small program
probably saves a registry entry that points to the saved downloaded bank
data file, and Money knows to load that file the next time it starts.

Hope this helps.

Let's start with the correct lingo. The computer knows nothing.
Applications know what they were told to do. Applications work with
files. Money data files are associated with the .mny suffix or "file
extension" or "association". Update files have a .ofx suffix. So
when you open a .mny file the program will look for a .ofx file and
perform the operations specified by the data contents. One of the
things it does is look for the account number of the FI. This should
prevent screw ups.

Worry not, it will work as one might expect it to work.

So sometimes I log onto my bank without even having MS Money opened. I click
download activity and it goes to some folder then tells me next time I open
money my account activity will be updated.

So how does my computer know which active file to save my downloaded
activity to if MS Money is not even open.

Money will only synchronize accounts in the active Money file and only one
Money file can be active at any time so you may have multiple files with the
same accounts but they will only download activity if they are in the file
that is currently open.

I have M04. So if I have the same accounts in two different money files, the
downloaded activity will go into each one.

The download information (passwords, username, etc.) is stored with the
file. That having been said, with M05/6 in some or all download connection
types, when you connect to an FI, it will download every account of yours it
can see there, regardless of any desire you might have to only download a
subset of accounts into a given Money file.

Default Downloading activity

If I have more then one money file on my computer how will Money know which
file to download my activity to from the bank?

I'm about to set up a new money file from scratch because the first one I
set up had to much junk imported from quicken. I'd like to keep the old file
on my computer for when I want to test a transaction such as addition of a
new account or something and I don't want to mess with the integrity of my
real money file.
