Default Re: Compound interest

A little further information. I have discovered that the re-invest interest
option works OK on an account where I am doing the same sequence of actions,
but the account is described as a unit trust, whereas the account I have
problems with is a money market account. On entering the re-invest interest
amount on the problem account, the amount of the original investment is
immediately deducted from the total at the bottom of the page. In the report
section a list of account totals shows the interest amount, plus original
amount with an almost corresponding debit. The original investment amount is
$5000, the debit is $4999. I'm afraid this is beyond my understanding. Had a
look through google groups but didn't find anything that sounder similar.
Regards, Pete.

I don't know that it's an old question, so there's nothing to apologize for.

Given this sequence--you really had established a position in the investment
prior to entering the reinvest interest transaction--I'm clueless as to
where the original buy/position went. This has not been reported as a common
problem to my recollection and I've been here a long time. You might search
newsgroup microsoft.public.money at http://groups.google.com. You might also
consider the file repair methods.

Many thanks for such a prompt reply. Yes that is exactly what happens. I
realise of course that there are later versions of Money, but until now, the
98 version has done all I require. Apologies for apparently re-asking an
old question, I have just discovered this news site. Pete.

Wow. Money98. An Oldie. Not a goodie even the day it was released. Until M05
was released, I thought it was the worst version ever. Anyway, enough
history...

Let's review the bidding here step-by-step.

You have created an Investment Account, named something like
"MyInvestmentAcct".

You have, say, a 5,000 NZD Buy Transaction in MyInvestmentAcct in an
Investment, defined as type Money Market Fund, and named something like
"MyMMF". The Transfer Account for this Investment transaction is set to some
appropriate account where the cash came from. Money will assume each share
of an MMF is 1 NZD, thus this is a 5,000 share transaction.

When you go to the Investment Account Summary page (I think M98 had
those--it's been a LONG TIME) and it shows a quantity of 5,000 shares of
MyMMF with a value of 5,000 NZD.

You now add a Reinvest Interest transaction in the MyInvestmentAcct register
for Investment MyMMF in the amount of, say, 100 shares at 100 NZD.

Now you go to the Investment Account Summary page and it shows a quantity of
100 shares of MyMMF with a value of 100 NZD not the expected 5,100 shares
with a value of 5,100 NZD.

Does this describe your issue and teh sequence of events you followed?

Default Compound interest

I have a money market investment account where quarterly interest is
compounded, ie added to the investment amount. I have tried entering this as
're-invest interest' but this seems to reduce the account balance to just
the interest amount. i.e. the original investment amount has vanished. Using
money 98. Best regards, Pete
