Default Re: 401K Loan in Money 2006?

You are on the right track as to how to model it. But there is no automatic
way. See http://umpmfaq.info/faqdb.php?q=2 for how I do it. My loan is paid
weekly and my 401k reinvests the loan proceeds weekly. I spend maybe two
minutes a week entering:

- the loan payment deduct from my paycheck is a separate afar tax transfer
to the 401k cash account in my scheduled paycheck; entering it is included
in entering my paycheck
- the loan payment in the loan account from a scheduled loan payment
transaction; this takes a few seconds longer because I classify the payment
elements and Money is still, 14 versions later, too stupid to know how to
schedule classification of loan payment elements
- the interest and sell transactions in the 401k loan investment; I use the
values from an amortization worksheet in Excel, but could pretty much just
as easily use the value from the loan payment entered above
- reinvestment of the payment amount is included in my a scheduled
investment buy transaction, so the loan adds no effort to enter this

It's not automatic, but it's not the most difficult task in the world,
either.

Thanks Dick,

I can see how I can enter the loan as an investment and carry the balance.
Then I have a separate loan account where I account for the payments. What
I'm hoping is there's some way I can't see to avoid having to manually update
the 401K as I make payments, and to allocate principal and interest correctly
per the amortization schedule (automatically).

I've been doing all of this in Money for almost a decade right up until the
automatically handle everything part. Do you want to know how or is your
requirement the automatic everything part?

Default 401K Loan in Money 2006?

Is there any way to record a 401K loan in Money 2006 so it will automatically
handle everything?

What I would like to do is to set up the loan as an asset in within the 401K
plan. Then have the payroll deductions track a payment schedule and pass
interest and pricipal back into the 401K.

I can't see any way to do this, it looks like I'm going to have to make
extra entries.
