I don't need to read even one more post in the thread--though I have read
all of them--to know that what you wrote indicates you don't understand that
part of the problem. If you think Bob told you to try to open a .M14 file
with M01, you clearly misread him. He also knows that isn't going to work.

A lot of people here have offered a lot of their time, effort, and knowledge
trying to help you. We feel your pain. We all have a lot--maybe more than
you--invested in our Money data files. We have imagined what it would be
like to loose data and have maybe had some close calls, but all of us
regulars in the NG go to more or less great lengths to protect against this
contingency. We do this so that if something goes seriously awry and a file
suddenly just can't be made to work we have other alternatives. If you
don't, that's unfortunate because despite everyone's best efforts to help
there may just be no way to recover your data. Personally, given the
symptom, I still think your issue is compatibility between whatever
version/edition/localization actually wrote the file and the version you are
using to read it. But people have suggested most every possibility there and
you have identified reasons those possibilities are probably wrong.

Thank you, I'll try it tonight and be back on here if that doesn't work.

In that case the Money 2006 Deluxe trial should do the job. I
thought perhaps your file started in Canada. That could have fit the
description. However given that you imply that have been in the US
all the time you were using Money I can't understand why you would
have been getting those symptoms.

Note that the Money 2001...2006 Standard has both a US mode and a
Canadian mode. But if your files are all US files, then I would not
expect you to get an "incompatible version" error message.

Really? I was thinking it was "incompatible version". That is what
you had reported originally when you said "Cannot open file because
it is an incompatible version."

Yes, I was told it was a US copy, my Money 2001 was a US copy and I'm in the
US in Ohio.

The 2005 error message was "Incompatible file type". :-(

I will repeat it:
==============================================

You were told it the version where you got the "incompatible
version" error WAS a US version of Money 2005. Are you in the US, so
that your original file would be expected to be a US file?

===============================================

Note that the Money 2006 Deluxe trial is US-only.

Not sure which question you are referring to. I can open a "new" money file
just fine, but when I try to restore my backup file to it, it asks for a
password on that, as well.

Also, both the 2005 version that was loaded with the HD reformat and the
original 2001 CD that i loaded after a complete, clean uninstall of 2005, is
a US version. I also checked all my regional settings as well. Was there
another question I missed in there?

I'll make the attempt with the 2006 trial version. I have tried to restore
in the other versions from both my "original" file and my jump drive backup,
and both ask for a password. :-(

You may wish to try this software:

There is other software - Google "lost money file password"

At the risk of getting you even more frustrated, try downloading the M2006
trial (it is fully functional) and open your M2001 file with that or restore
from your jump drive.

<SIGH> I had already tried to change and use the .mn9 file - to no avail.
Bob Peel suggested finding and renaming/trying the .m14 file, which I did
LAST night.

I'm so incredibly frustrated and ticked off, it's just beyond funny at this
point. I am, literally, sick to my stomach over this whole thing. I have
been a user of MS products, quite faithfully, since they were first
introduced, and while I realize anything MS is inherently going to have
problems, this is not a minor issue. This is insanely ridiculous and just
undescribably frustrating.

If there is ANYONE out that with any possible solutions that actually have a
snowball's chance of working, I REALLY, REALLY would prefer to use my
original file instead of having to run down at least all my 2005 information
and re-enter it manually - let alone trying to rebuild 4-5 years worth of
back data from previous loans/mortgages, credit cards, non-local banks.

Please, read through all the threads to see what I have done, and I fully
welcome any viable solutions to rectify this problem.

Thank you

It could also be a M05 file created by an upgrade to M06. There is little
wonder it didn't open in M01.

A .m14 file is a Money 2005 file created as Money upgraded to
version 14.0.*.1105.

An automatic backup of a Money 2001 file is *.mn9

OK, I found the .m14 file, renamed it as .mny, and opened my Money 2001. I
went to File...Open, found the file, clicked OK, and .....................
Money requires a Password to open this file.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it wasn't evident by my last reply, I'm beyond frustrated, upset, and
feel darn near the verge of a coronary. Had I any inkling whatsoever that
this kind of problem would occur out of the blue, I would have endured the
snail's pace, diminished capacity of my PC (no kidding, it was taking 1.75
hours to load the OS after reboot!) to finish my taxes and run copies of my
account registers before reformatting and reloading my HD.

ANY possibility of last hope on this? Does anyone know if QuickBooks will
allow you to import a Money file? If I have to load the "latest and
greatest" software and/or RE-enter as much (or little as the case will be
with certain accounts I have on the non-retrievable file), it seems - at this
point - I'm really better off switching software. I will have tomorrow
evening and Saturday morning for a few hours to do SOMETHING to rectify this
file situation so I can attempt to do my taxes next week - or else I'll have
to bite the bullet and go get new software.

Thanks for any last ditch help anyone can offer.

Default Re: Money 2001 file - I never used a password

Have a look around your system for a file MyMoney.m14 as I have a suspicion
that inspite of complaining about Incompatible Versions it did perform some
form of upgrade and marked your MyMoney.mny file as V14/M2005.

If you have a .m14 file then that is a copy of your M2001 file just before
M2005 tried to update it. You can rename the .m14 file as .mny and input to
M2001.

For safety take a copy of your current MyMoney.mny file before renaming.

PS substitute whatever your .mny file was name for MyMoney.

Default Re: Money 2001 file - I never used a password

Thank you, but I know that my file is Mnoey 2001 - I've not upgraded the file
at any time, until I had done the reformat of my hard drive, and we had
loaded Money 2005.

I have completely uninstalled the 05 software and clean installed my
original software, and that's where I get the password.

I really must either have a solution to getting past the password request,
or I will most likely switch to another software program for my finances like
QuickBooks - if I have to re-enter all the lost data again, it doesn't seem
to make sense to use software that has so many issues. I cannot afford to
wait any longer, nor can I afford to ever lose this much critical data in the
future...4-5 years worth of banking transactions, tax reports from those
transactions, mortage/loan tracking information and so on... the data is not
lost, it's just suddenly 'inaccessible' with no hope of recovery. This is
insane.

Default Re: Money 2001 file - I never used a password

The password message can also mean that you are trying to open a Money file
created by version x+1 with version x. e.g. your Money file was created by
M2002 and you are trying to open with M2001. Basically it is a stupid way of
trying to tell you that Money is not backwards compatible.

As Cal has said the "incompatible version error" is because you are trying
to read a file produced by a US version with a UK (say) version of Money.

Ok. That was worrisome if you could not create a new file. That
inappropriate "password" error message is usually caused by the
Money file being from a newer version than the install.

You were told it the version where you got the "incompatible
version" error WAS a US version of Money 2005. Are you in the US, so
that your original file would be expected to be a US file?

I can create a new, blank file - no problem, but then I cannot restore my
original backup file because IT asks for a password. SO, the new, blank file
doesn't achieve the goal I'm trying to reach - which is accessing my 4-5
years worth of data that worked just fine and did not have any kind of
password associated to it (or it's backup) just a week ago.

Also, I found a .Mn9 file that I tried to rename to .mny and use, and it
tells me that I need a password to open it... :-(

Thanks,
