MS don't do upgrades let alone free ones for Money! Their reasoning is that
the street price after discounts/mail-in rebates ends up so low....... For
example M2006 Premium has a list price of 80 USD with a MS rebate of 30 USD.

Have a look at Amazon - they have standard at 29.95 USD and there's a 5 USD
rebate.

You know, I was sure that it was a later version of Money, but I can't find
the disks for it. All I have is the version of Works 7.0 that came with the
laptop in 2004, which doesn't have Money on it, and Works 2001 which came
with a previous PC which included the version I've loaded up. Is it possible
that there was a free[*] upgrade available to a later version? If so, is it
still available somewhere?
[*] I'm a stingy so-n-so.

Hugo:
I'm not sure if this will help or not.

If you backed up your files to a CD, the process changes the files attribute to "Read only"

Locate your Money file (xxxxxxx.mny) on your hard drive, right click it, choose "Properties"
at the bottom of the "General" tab it the Attributes. Uncheck "Read only" if it's checked.

Hope it works.

This usually means that you are trying to open a .mny file created with a
newer version of Money. Are you sure about the version being M2001. Perhaps
you tried a later version?

Default Money password problem

I've just reinstalled XP on my laptop, and like a clever chap, I backed up
all my data, etc. I've reloaded Money (2001) and tried to open the My Money
file, but it's asking me for a password.

For the life of me, I don't remember ever entering a password. I've tried
pressing return (blank password), I've entered every possible password I can
think of (mother's maiden name, first school, etc) but nothing works. I've
used a couple of demo password cracking programs, but both say no password
has been set. I've tried the same with the back-up file, but with the same
result.

If it is a blank password, how do I get it to recognise that? If it has set
its own password, how on earth am I going to get it?
