No. You choose in the setup whether your backup files are to be
compressed.

Note that if you collect quotes on many securities, your files will
grow over time.

I am glad that your latest backup file fixed you up. I like keeping
more than one vintage of backup files. Here is what I suggest for
Money 2005 backup strategy:

In Tools-> Settings-> BackupOptions
I suggest checking
x Automatically backup to hard disk on exit
x Prompt me before backing up each time*
x Make my file small ...

Then periodically, perhaps once per month or more, copy your
latest backup (named differently from your earlier backups) to a
CDR. With XP, this can be a copy and paste operation. Otherwise
use the burning software that came with your CDR drive.

I strongly suggest use of a USB Flash drive also, in addition to
backing up to your hard drive. They typically act like a big
floppy. For a more automated way to make multiple backups, see
Glyn Simpson's method at http://money.mvps.org/backup.aspx

* This has two advantages. You can change the file name
occasionally. I like to pick a name something like money060311.
Then it is easy to change the name to have multiple backups. The
..mbf extension is automatic. The other advantage is that you can
choose "Don't Back Up, or you change your mind about exiting by
simply clicking the X in the upper right of the pop-up box.

Money 2006 has a built-in process to maintain a specified number of
backups.

Thank you, Cal, you are indeed an MVP, that worked just fine.

Follow uo question - should I be concerned if my MNY file is nearly 5MB but
my backup is only about 900kB?

Thanks again,

Colin

Close Money.

Make an extra copy of your .mny file and recent .mbf files onto
different media.

Then double-click your most recent back and restore your file.

See http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;889930
and follow it if you want your Money file to use the same Passport
on your Money file that you used when you bought Money.

If you want something other than to do that, do something slightly
different. Create a NEW empty file (named perhaps Temp.mny) that
you put the referenced Passport onto. Let Money download data that
it needs. Close Money. Restart Money.

Confirm that Money shows the right version. Then click on your
real Money file that is shown on the bottom of the File menu.

Default Login failure after crash

I've used Money since 1997 and this version of 2005 Deluxe since 8/05. When
I started tonight it crashed for no apparent reason. Now when I try to sign
back in I get "Money has detected that you did not save <filename> .mny before
exiting". It says that it needs to verify my data. Whether I click yes or
no it then tells me that my e-mail address or password are wrong. I know the
address and password are correct (I just used them to sign up for this
forum). Can anyone advise me how to get out of this loop?

Follow up question - I bought this version as a download direct from MS.
Without a CD, how would I go about reinstalling?

Thanks,

Colin
