I assume you are saying that the Tools-> Settings-> ProgramSettings-> (Display StartMoneyWithThisPageOpen:AccountListwas the work-around. It seemed like a long shot, but long shots come in sometimes. The problem has been known to come about when you have "Investment Perf Module" configured for the "Home page" and there are a lot of stocks. You are now, with your current settings, not visiting the home page when Money starts. The StartMoneyWithThisPageOpen is global between files. I like to start in the Account list. You can work around this by configuring out the problem module without having to visit the home page to do it. Tools-> Settings-> HomePageDisplayOptions lets you remove the Investment Perf Module or any other thing, from the home page. - quote - > A related matter: I'm not aware what "doing the salv.exe' thing is. No. It is not something you do if you are not having a problem. You> data file repair? Should I do it in this case? File-> RepairMoneyFile-> QuickFileRepair is something that you might want to do, even if there are no problems that you have noticed. It straightens some things up in the database, and is unlikely to have a potential downside. - quote - > Many thanks for your help. |

| Thank you! This solutions works on both the 'old' (pre-data added) and the 'new' (most recent copy of data) files. I think I am back in business. Your hunch was a good one. May I have some insight into what you think happened? A related matter: I'm not aware what "doing the salv.exe' thing is. Is it data file repair? Should I do it in this case? Should it be a regular event? Many thanks for your help. To recap, your symptom is a long term hang with no error message as> ... Money opens, asks for the PW for the mny file, then goes to la la land. > I'm feeling hooped! soon as you enter your password. Conventional password, or Passport? On a hunch, on one of the files you can open, try Tools-> Settings-> ProgramSettings-> (Display StartMoneyWithThisPageOpen:AccountListThen try opening your regular file. And then do the salv.exe thing. |

You could do what is described in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902466/en-us If this gives you a problem, here is another way: go to the install folder for Money, into a "MNYCoreFiles" folder. This may be "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money 2006\MNYCoreFiles" There you will run salv.exe. From there you can follow the steps starting at the *second* step 3. |

| Thank you. Small steps ... I have re-installed Money (2005 Premium, btw) and had slightly different results. It again failed to open the data file in question, but it did exit properly, leaving behind a .LRD file, which I presume is some kind of error report. My next step (before using the detailed suggestions you have kindly offered) is to use a version of the data file that pre-dates the large data additions I made to it. (I backup a lot!) My suspicion is that something happened with this data (it involved transferring things from one account to another) that may have messed up the data file. Review your backup situation. Do you have a slightly older backup> > > What is the Money version? > > > Do not delete or change your Passport while you are having these > > problems. NO WORRIES ON THAT SCORE! > you could use? Did you back up to flash drive? Did you copy a backup or file to a CDR recently? This is where Money 2006 could have helped. It creates multiple backups. Three by default, tho I think most people should increase that number to maybe 20 if they have a large drive. Anyway, one more idea here: Close Money. Copy your .mbf file to a USB flash drive. I would try creating a new XP user with Administrator privilege. Switch to that user and double-click the .mbf file on the USB flash drive using Windows Explorer. That should open Money as the new user, and start a restore. Do not take the default location for the restored file. Instead, browse to the My Documents folder of the new user. Specify a new file name. The theory is that if the problem is an IE6 setting, you will get default settings for the new user. If you succeed this way, it would accomplish the download, and it would point toward the reason the other did not work. You can delete the new user later, and your regular IE6 settings will not have been changed. |

| I added a lot of data to an existing file earlier today. This evening, the file crashed right after PW entry, twice. Thinking corruption, I restored the backup from earlier today. Same result. I can't get at my data, which leaves me in panic mode. Suggestions most welcome! |
