| There might be a link between your Microsoft Money 2005 file and the Money 2006 "Portfolio" file on MSN Money. It may have to do with a bad "jarmap" file as mentioned in the second item at http://moneycentral.msn.com/pmquestions.asp about "My Portfolio is constantly converting" Especially since you mentioned that you had files numbering from 1 to 34. -Mark "JK-of-Indy" <JKofIndy[at]discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:9DD55261-6CDF-4841-9065-17CFBE6CDC35[at]microsoft.com... - quote - > Mark, > I did once navigate to the Portfolie area once. > That must have been wherein the mbf file got created. > Yet, I just got done using Money w/o going to MSN Money (at least as near > as I can tell), and now I notice that I have a > "<name> accounts.mny" file and a > "<name> Accounts Backup.mbf" file and a > "<name> accounts34.mny" file. > The first two are date and time stamped at one minute apart. > The third one is about 3 hours earlier... > And that leads me to these questions: > 1. Which begs the question: does the OP have two versions in play? A recentreinstall? What, exactly? I'm willing to believe the OP that the version he checked locally was M05. But I note: - quote - > And this is the first time I ever used or had Money on my computer, so it

I do think I know these two things: 1) *.M14 files get created by M05 .1105, or M06, upon upgrading an M05 < ..1005 file. Short of someone going and naming one that, there is no other way these get there. 2) Files with names like name abc accounts34 Backup_2006-03-07_022635.mbf do not get created by M05 in an offline environment. Yes. Sorry. I got confused as to your version. I see that you were> it that allows me to select how many backup files to keep. Could this have > been > something new with M06? clear in saying Money 2005. *.mny are Money files (and as Mark pointed out) Moneycentral Deluxe portfolio files. *.mbf files are Money backup files, and an additional sequenced one is made whenever you do a backup restore. Here are my suggestions about how to handle backups for Money 2005: In Tools-> Settings-> BackupOptions I suggest checking x Automatically backup to hard disk on exit x Prompt me before backing up each time* x Make my file small ... Then periodically, perhaps once per month or more, copy your latest backup (named differently from your earlier backups) to a CDR. With XP, this can be a copy and paste operation. Otherwise use the burning software that came with your CDR drive. I strongly suggest use of a USB Flash drive also, in addition to backing up to your hard drive. They typically act like a big floppy. For a more automated way to make multiple backups, see Glyn Simpson's method at http://money.mvps.org/backup.aspx * This has two advantages. You can change the file name occasionally. I like to pick a name something like money060211. Then it is easy to change the name to have multiple backups. The ..mbf extension is automatic. The other advantage is that you can choose "Don't Back Up, or you change your mind about exiting by simply clicking the X in the upper right of the pop-up box. |

| Mark, I did once navigate to the Portfolie area once. That must have been wherein the mbf file got created. Yet, I just got done using Money w/o going to MSN Money (at least as near as I can tell), and now I notice that I have a "<name> accounts.mny" file and a "<name> Accounts Backup.mbf" file and a "<name> accounts34.mny" file. The first two are date and time stamped at one minute apart. The third one is about 3 hours earlier... And that leads me to these questions: 1. As I was using Money on my PC, did it automatically enter my MSN Money Portfolio - behind the scenes - so to speak? 2. Are the 1st two files the ones I should consider active and can I therefore delete the rest? 3. Does Money do automatic, behind the scenes, access to my online accounts even when I am not actively running it? If so, could that be where the third file came from, and if that is true, why the different file name template? Again thanks for your advice and patience. | Thanks for the input. I verified my Money version and it is M05, not M06. And this is the first time I ever used or had Money on my computer, so it could not have been an upgrade. In addition, I have never seen any Internet upgrade, or Internet patches to the baseline of M05... and I watch for these things closely. I have looked through the menu options of M05 and have not found any one that would invoke a software update funtcion. (I did find ones for updating my data on the Microsoft Servers associated with Money though). And upon looking in my folder where the money files are stored, I find two different M14 files: "<name> accounts34.M14" and "++<name> accounts.M14". So it looks like something is seriously wrong. Further, the "<name> <date> .mbf" files only appeared on my system after I invoke an online backup (i.e., a backup while I was working off my data on the Microsoft online servers. So it appears those files, regardless of Money version, are created when a backup is done while online. Thanks for your thoughts so far, but my problem is still present. Don't know. Perhaps you were running some kind of timed backup batch> I've set it up so that the "mny" file is in a specified folder on my hard > drive. > But, I have now noticed that I have over thirty of them, all with the > following name format: > name abc accounts.mny > name abc accounts0.mny > name abc accounts1.mny > name abc accounts2.mny > ... > name abc accounts34.mny file. - quote - > This is disturbing...
As Dick said.> if I keep using the program, how high will these file number go? > Note: I also have now observed files named as: > name abc accounts34.M14 - quote - > and
Money 2006 introduces a useful multiple backup file feature. Those> name abc accounts34 Backup_2006-03-07_022635.mbf > and > name abc accounts34 Backup_2006-03-07_022755.mbf are the multiple backups, and you can choose how many you want: In M06: Tools-> Settings-> BackupOptions I suggest checking x Automatically backup my Money file every time I close Money Save in [a place on your hard drive ] x Ask me before backing up each time* x Compress Backup Files Keep only the _20_most recent backup files [adjust to taste] x Perform scheduled backups every _7_ days Save in [a USB flash drive location] x Ask me before backing up each time* x Compress Backup Files Keep only the _2_most recent backup files [adjust to taste] (note: does not hold to limit in Money 2006. Delete the older ones manually) Then periodically, perhaps once per month or more, copy your latest backup (uniquely named by Money) to a CDR. With XP, this can be a copy and paste operation. Otherwise use the burning software that came with your CDR drive. I strongly suggest use of a USB Flash rather than floppies. They are bigger, so you don't have to swap media to back up. Plus they are much more reliable (but not failure-proof). * The reason I have Money ask me, is that I don't want to back up each time I exit. If I went into Money 5 times in a day, I would not want to back up 5 times, nor would I want to delete 5 other backup files. You will be given the choice to BackUpNow or to Postpone. |

| The "name abc accounts34.M14" file is a copy of your old Money2005 data file before upgrade to M05 with the service fixes or to M06--which is what I think you are REALLY running. If you are 100% sure you'd never need to go back to M05, then I'd guess you can safely delete it. The "name abc accounts34 Backup_2006-03-07_022635.mbf" file is a backup file made by Money2006. The fact that you have them is why I think, contrary to information in your post, you are really running M06. Creation of these files is controlled by the M06 Backup settings at Money File|Backup. The 2006-03-07_022635 part is a timestamp for when the backup was created, in this case, 2006-03-07 02:26:35. The number of these that will be made/kept before old ones will be deleted is also controlled by the Backup settings. The basic filename "name abc accounts34" part says that the basic file in use when you created the backup was named "name abc accounts34.mny". Taken together, the fact that you have a "name abc accounts34.mny", a "name abc accounts34.m14", and a series of "name abc accounts34 Backup*.mbf" files suggests that the filename you have been using for quite some time--indeed since you first moved to M06--is "name abc accounts34.mny" This suggests that the "name abc accountsxx.mny" files, where xx is <34, all date from before your conversion to M06. You could check their date in Windows Explorer File|Properties to confirm this. I have no idea why you or M05 would have created them all. | I'm new to Microsoft Money 2005. Using it about a month now. I've set it up so that the "mny" file is in a specified folder on my hard drive. But, I have now noticed that I have over thirty of them, all with the following name format: name abc accounts.mny name abc accounts0.mny name abc accounts1.mny name abc accounts2.mny .... name abc accounts34.mny This is disturbing... if I keep using the program, how high will these file number go? Note: I also have now observed files named as: name abc accounts34.M14 and name abc accounts34 Backup_2006-03-07_022635.mbf and name abc accounts34 Backup_2006-03-07_022755.mbf |
